what exactly does dread, loyalty, etc. do for you?

Dread is basically terror. The more skulls you have the more menacing a unit (or general) is.
Loyalty is how loyal your general, province, army, etc. The more flags (kingdom icon) your army, generals and provinces have the more difficult for other kingdoms to bribe them.

Ok, but my question was what exactly does dread do? Is it a factor in your people's loyalty? or can a unit with high dread scare off the enemy on the battlefield quicker?
Side question: How do you make peace?

Every 2 dread for a governer adds 10% loyalty to the province governed. The effect is similar in kings, but are of less proportion, or so I believe...
There is a possibility (or perhaps the better informed would answer?) that your king's dread also somehow influence diplomacy.
Make peace by sending an emissary (or a priest of the same religion, if you share it with your enemy) to the enemy king. If he reaches him, then the king may accept peace.

Well, I thought "dread" was self explanatory anyway lol. AntiochiusIII said it good.
Proposing Cease-Fire:
1. You must not have your troops besieging enemy castle.
2. Pull back your troops from enemy provinces or from the bordering provinces to be sure because they might ask you to do that before they can accept the proposal.
3.You must not have your fleet attacking enemy fleets.
4. Keep proposing if they turn the offer down; they might need couple years to consider your good intentions.
5. Know when to be nice. I mean don't just run away if they invade just because you want to cease fire. Die for your people and kingdom! (sorry, I'm just into it)
I hope that helps a little bit. Powerful kingdoms get cocky though. They refuse proposals a lot. The AI isn't so dumb after all.

The AI is an idiot, regarding diplomacy. The most horrible AI about diplomacy is from MTW.
Dread has no effects on the battlefield, only on the province.
