I can't quite fathom out which emotion the handball smiley repersents. And why is it amongst the most used ones?
I beleive its symbolises boredom. ~:handball:

That's what I said.
Just think of the scene in the Great Escape when Steve McQueen is in the cooler. ~:handball:

Ok, so it symbolises boredom, but why have it among the most used ones? Surely there are betterand more useful smileys.

I always thought that this ~:handball: symbol was used when somebody is frustrated.Like having a conversation with himself in a thread. ~:handball:

Interresting question, especially if we broaden it a bit, and ask "what's the point of smilies?"

To express emotion, to add humour to a post... the possibilities are endless

well, to me humor isnt a little yellow (or often blue or green even) dot that represents something remotely similar to human emotions.

The problem with asynchronous technology based communication is that it lacks the interpersonal cues we rely on to decipher the total message. Facial expression, gestures, body language: All are absent. Emoticons help to bridge that gap and present a fuller meaning to the user's text.
Examples:
~D I am joking, this is fun, that was funny, I agree with you and think that we are having fun.
:furious3: I am angry, that makes me angry
 thank you, I am making my statement with humility
:wall: Frustration, lack of control
:coffeenews: I am ignoring you, I do not think this is important
Other are difficult to find an emotion. Like what the hell is this: :daisy:
