A question about Diplomacy I assume that most people find that in RTW it was seriously lacking, I understand from the forums that it is hardcoded so I was wondering have the EB team perhaps come up with some innovative solution that could improve this aspect of the game.

Diplomacy is hardcoded, sorry.

How about the "alternative" diplomatic options, such as the "alliance with smaller city-states?" How will they work?

From what I understand, there's not a real "diplomacy" in the traditional sense with the indepentdent cities. It's a script, which, when you siege a city, tells a certain faction to go to war with you. It's supposed to be representing the fact that if you try to expand, other bigger powers will try to keep you in check and halt your expansion. Of course, I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure this is the basic system in place.

It could work the other way, too, where a small allied city-state could request your assistance when threatened by a larger power. Or your attack on a traditionally neutral city might be seen by your competitors as a precursor to all-out war with them, with attendant consequences. :charge:
