the United Nations reports that Scotland is the most violant place in the developed world, with 2000 attacks a week. However, various senior officers of the constabulary criticised the report, saying that 2000 is about 10 times greater than the number of attacks in police records.

Scotland worst for violence - UN

The report claims there are 2,000 attacks per week
Scotland has been named the most violent country in the developed world by a United Nations report.
The study found that, excluding murder, Scots were almost three times as likely to be assaulted as Americans.

Victims of crime in 21 countries were interviewed by the UN, but senior Scots police officers criticised the study.

The survey concluded that 2,000 Scots were attacked every week. That figure is 10 times the number recorded in official police figures.

The results showed Scotland was more violent than either England or Wales.

The figure for Scotland dwarves that of other developed nations such as Japan, where people are 30 times less likely to be attacked.

A statement from the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland said: "The general picture of Scotland around the world is not one of a violent country

I would believe the UN report more than the records of the constabulary, considering that attacks are only reported if the attacked person is middle-aged, elderly, an upstanding citizen (which rarely occurs), or the attack is serious enough for the person to go to hospital. Although, it is this type of behaviour that makes us produce the best soldiers in the world.

You'd trust a bunch of drunk guys eating sheep's stomachs with guns?!

There'd be about 2000 murders a week if you let them have guns. Plus all the accidental drunken deaths...

Hehe.

Well, what do you expect from a nation where the national hobby is head-butting and the national sport is some weird ice-sweeping game! Id be violent too! ~;)

Wow. Considering the small population (5 million, right?) that is an amazing amount of violence. It's like you guys want to turn Scotland into a desolate wasteland, who's only residents are sheep and a donkey named Mavis. I'm glad i live south of the border, in cheery old England, where the attacks may be less but more severe.

I would of thought Northern Ireland in the UK area. But then there isn't that much crime compared to other areas

Mikeus Caesar

In Northern Ireland, there isn't really much crime, but when there is some, it's most likely an innocent person getting hit by a firebomb, or a riot.

Fighting amongst ourselves has always been more important than fighting England. The Clan Wars, the Bishops' Wars (which led onto the English Civil War), the Jacobite Rebellions, the Glencoe Massacre, and a whole host of other conflicts.

Regicide was the in thing then.

Duke Malcolm
09-18-2005, 21:28
Oh yes. I never quite realised how rampant regicide was. I thought it was only occasionally, but about 3 of the 7 Jameses were victims of it.

weak kings and overpowerful lords has definitely been a recurrent theme in Scottish history.

I always thought it was sad how MacBeth, who seemed quite a decent king, got killed and then demonised.

I think it's mostly that nobody can understand what anyone's saying. Therefore, they need to express themselves through violence.

"Ma weans ay givun mae haell, ah dinnae ken what ta da".

"Excuse me, what?"

I'm not surprised at all.

Everybody knows the type: a couple of guys, short haircuts, football jerseys, totally pissed by 10 PM and looking for a fight.

They ravage all the capitals and sun coasts of Europe. I hate them, bloody filth.

I am surprised that Scotland is the most violent area though, my guess would've been England's northeast - the Newcastle / Sunderland area.

I have to admit, I tried my hand at studying Scottish gaelic for fun...that is a difficult language. I can't say that I ever "got it" although I really wanted to. Usually, with a language after a few days of independent study I can pronounce most words passably even if I have no clue what I'm saying...not with this one. I'll give it another go some time, I don't like being beaten. Must be that stubborn scottish blood in me.

Bah, Gaidhlig's not that bad. Keep at it.

In all seriousness, though, Scotland's not doing that well economically, and that can be the catalyst for a lot of problems. I also heard that racism is on the rise.

You see, this is the difference between the US and the rest of the world. So here, Scotland is tapped as most violent place in developed world, people jump in and make Scot jokes, and the Scots are all just like, "yeah, well".

Anything like this in the US and people would be up in arms like "Oh no you didn't just discriminate against me! Gah! Gah! Blah!"

Or what do all of you think?

DA

Never read Trainspotting, but I saw the movie.

I think it's a different kind of violence entirely.

It was them they were talking about ~;) .

When I moved to England 3 years ago I was looking to buy a house, I was warned by several people in work to avoid the council estates as they were very rough. When my wife moved down a couple of months later we done some investigating and the rough estates could have passed for some of the nice private estates where I come from.

But, the most violent place in the developed world, not sure about that, there's not that much gun crime that I remember but you can always expect to see a couple of scuffles on a night out. Saying that, Scotland is my home and I love it, it just helps you to grow up, my neighbours child still crys when his mum shouts at him and he's 12ish years old.

If only Scotland could sort out the unemployment and drugs the place would be almost perfect, almost because of the weather ~D .

Racism's not that big an issue in Scotland, unless you're English just ask John Barnes he said he was racially abused numerous times when he was with Celtic but no-one ever mentioned the fact he was black. In Scotland we refer to Chinese people as Chinkies or Chinks, but we don't see that as racist, it's just a term and it's not meant as an insult, no Chinese that have lived in Scotland for any amount of time would be insulted by it.

Yes, we often seem to use what are classes as derogatory terms for people, but don't mean anything by it, although actual racism is on the rise. I heard someone at my school stole all the shoes from the Dundee Mosque a few weeks back

That was kind of suprising considering how I'm constantly told that I live in the most violent, crime-infested country to ever exist. Do you think that this study is accurate?
