We have had promising results from our tests so far, so we have not been sent back to the drawing board...yet. However it seems that this solution may slow down AI turns on the campaign map. I am not sure if that is something we want to do.

[Off-topic but until we puppies are let through EBs door, why not go with it.]Yes, it surprised me at first but then I got sucked into Warhammer Fantasy tabletop gaming with my young son.

The first observation to make is that electronic gaming has the potential to provide much better historical wargames than the tabletop can. For example, as a long standing (board) wargamer, I was impressed by the amount of modifiers and units in the Total War games. Fatigue, weather, facting, elevation, terrain, formation etc. These were more than you get in most table top games, because the computer can handle complexity so much more quickly than a couple of humans with a rule book and a six sided dice (or 20 six sided dice). And the Total War games were not even designed to be historical wargames in a hardcore sense.

And this is not to mention that a decent electronic game can provide much more content for a much better price than table-top gaming where one army can set you back hundreds of pounds.

However, the other point to make is that table top gaming has other appeals that a computer can't quite emulate[1]. Going back to that army costing hundreds of pounds - I suspect 2/3 of the table-top hobby is collecting and painting rather than playing. That's certainly been the case with my son and I. And while we both ultimately would rather spend our time electronic gaming rather than painting, there is a certain fascination and pride with a loving painted army of well sculpted minis.

[1]Or then again, maybe the appropriate electronic comparison here might be with the feeling EB modders have when they look on the beauty of their creations.

Did someone mention warhammer 40k and table top gaming? Groovy, I agree with what Simon said, 2/3rds of the fun was with collecting the army and painting it up, and converting units and making sceanery etc. I used to be well into this hobby when I was about 12, and you can't beat the absolute freedom of reality in comparison to a computer game. Oh and Dawn of War is ok, but it could be wayyyy better, for example if it were made in the same format as the total war games, with a massive campaign map spanning over the entire known regions in the warhammer 40k universe. There is so much content, detail and history included in the hobby that it would be so stupid to miss out on such a thing. I also think that warhammer 40k would make a most excellent film (or more).
