ALMOST one in four Australians were born overseas, the highest proportion in more than a hundred years, according to new figures.
Out of a population of 20 million, 4.8 million or 24 per cent, were direct immigrants, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said today.

Sudanese-born people were the fastest growing group, increasing by an average 26 per cent per year over the past eight years, but starting from a low base of only 2600 people in 1996.
The next fastest growing group was from Afghanistan (12 per cent per year) and Iraq (11 per cent per year), the bureau said.
