Why is it wrong to wish an early death onto those whom you dislike? If they are going to die one day anyway, wouldn't it be in your best interest if they did so before they became an impediment to your enjoyment or personal fulfillment? Please explain.

Wow suddenly the idea of self inexestence took it's toll ove you ~;) . On the subject: Who sais it's wrong? This is one of the moral stupidity that has lasted for so many years that it anoys me.

Let's turn the tables for a second. How would you feel if you learned that somebody you didn't care much for was eagerly anticipating your demise?

I don't think in strict post-modernist secular humanist morality wishing misfortune on somebody is immoral. Jag or BP could speak better to that. In traditional Christian morality it is wrong because: 1) you are harboring ill will against somebody instead of pushing yourself to forgive and 2) it violates the golden rule.

Remember, morality is 'that which is considered right and wrong'. But considered by whom, and why, is an important part of that. I say it's despicably wrong to abandon your wife & kids to go shack up with some young floozy. Others in the backroom have said that I am judgemental and have no right to condemn anyone for such a act. Who's right? Both of us, as we're approaching this measurement problem with 2 different yardsticks.

Wishful Thinking would make no difference at all. You can wish anything you want, and sometimes you can't even control what you wish would hapen.

When I read the title I thought something else. I thought the subject was about wishful misfortune in terms of the individual himself. Wishing ill for oneself. That's a particularly interesting thing for me. ~:)

I understand the religious arguements about why certain things are wrong, It is too bad that religion seems so absurd. I want to see what the non-religious have to say, as I am one of them.

While logic and reason may dictate that there is no god, and no such thing as karma, it's always a good idea to play it safe just in case. We've all been bitten in the ass by whole "What goes around comes around." thing more than once, no?

What about anti-karma? If it is possible that bad deeds build up negative karma you have to live out, it is equally possible that good deeds do exactly the same. No, there´s no playing safe.
However wishing others ill isn´t good for several reason:
- it doesn´t work
- since most people get rather old these days, chance is high that you won´t see your wish fulfilled, which will make you unhappy and, irrationally, not necessarily wiser
- while your bad thoughts won´t harm other people, they may harm you. Negative thoughts, like resentment, can cause stress and be detrimental to your health. It´s better to get over it and focus on positive things.

I don't think that it's necessarily wrong. But it certainly is (at best) a waste of your time and (at worst) a very negative emotion that you are letting into yourself that can do nothing other than make you unhappy.

And as others have already mentioned it's just bad karma, which I am a firm believer in.

I think Kabbalah has a belief of the Evil Eye that revolves around people wishing evil upon you and you being able to block the evil with a red bracelet :dizzy2: .

Personally I think it is ok to wish a little misfortune on others but it is probably better to wish them a little enlightenment ~D .

One of the many obstacles to a good life is wishing for misfortune to befall others. I make an effort to avoid it.

Think I have to agree with Dari' here.

The Don nicely sums up the perspective of Christianity's views on the subject, and I agree.

Even if that philosophy is not yours, Dari' is suggesting that any thoughts along those lines are, at best, wasted effort on your part that you could focus on making things better for you and yours.

It isn't, as long as you don't do anything to make them die faster. But I believe the reason why people think it's bad to wish someone to death is because they fear that those who emotionally wish someone to death often end up doing at least something to make them die faster, and that is a bad thing unless the death of the bugger is justified, but that's another discussion...
