Well, to give a definite answer, we need to know which game, and which version (expansion, patch), you are playing. I shall assume you are refering to S:TW or M:TW since it is unlikely R:TW is already in the bargain bin. If you bring more than 16 units to a battle, you can call in extra units after one or more of the first sixteen are destroyed or have left the field (essentially: when you have less than 16 unit flags at the bottom of the screen). There is a button in the top-row of the screen called reinforcements. If you press this one, two other buttons appear. One placed the reinforcements rally flag (the position where the reinforcements will head to), the other calls up one unit of reinforcements.
I advise you not rely on this: the reinforcement take a lot of time to arrive and will be tired. Try to win with the first sixteen, it is unlikely that reinforcements will play a crucial role in the battle.

Thank you. I have medieval total war, no expansion yet :)

I urge you to acquire the Viking Invasion expansion as soon as you're able--it greatly improves the game on all levels. Medieval is still a terrific game by itself, however; you're in for loads of fun either way! Just make sure to download the 1.1 patch for Medieval (if you haven't already), as it fixes a number of bugs and balancing issues. Happy conquering! ~

I hate to be a pest but could people who recommend the 1.1 patch and/or the VI expansion please also warn people that this will render their current campaign saves and old battle replays unuseable?
By all means download the patch or purchase VI but, if you are thouroughly enjoying your current campaign, be sure to finish it before running the install procedures.
That said, I thouroughly recommend the VI expansion as you get a 'pre-battle' screen, with a facility for making an interim gamesave.
Also, not only can you control the sequence in which reinforcements will appear, but also adjust your starting 16 to suit the situation.
Provided agents or watch towers are in place, you also get to see exactly what units and reinforcements the enemy is bringing, so the ability to set good unit matchups is vital.

I have the same version as you do, so I likewise didn't get a manual and understand your frustration. There is a site out there which has pdf copies of many game manuals (their count is 5000+). Email me at bigredk001 [at] yahoo [dot] ca and I'll send you the link.
Otherwise, I think if you run a couple of the battle tutorials, it should give you the basics of reinforcements. Atleast I didn't have a problem with reinforcements. With that said, the reinforcements button is up at the top right.

I agree to not rely on it, but luckily for me, it was what saved me in a battle with the Mongols. I had setup my defensive lines up exactly how I wanted them. My mouse had accidently clicked somewhere moving my cavalry where I didn't want them to be and before I realized it I had pressed the begin button. My cavalry was between my Vikings and the Mongol cavalry with nowhere to run. My entire force routed almost immediately (or what seemed like almost immediately). Luckily my reinforcements came on just after the last unit fled so they were not affected much by the routing units, and manage to decimate the horde. What really affected the battle was that I set my defensive lines very close to where the enemy might appear so there was not much room for recovery.
I find if I can't win with my first 16 units (or atleast with the first couple reinforcements coming onto the field) I'm likely going to lose the battle. Unless of course I've manage to keep my forces stationary as my opponent and I trade missile fire. Usually I'll move up with the archers and if they are not pursued but we get into a missile battle, once I've emptied them, I send them off the field to see what else I get.

I think this was one of the greatest improvements (in addition to the Viking campaign). It was great to have the ability to determine the composition of the starting army and then the order of reinforcements. It was also great to be able to save. Save the game then run the battle and decide if it was the best course of action. What would be a nice additional enhancement is during the battles on the reinforcements screen if there was a set of buttons to call specifically for infantry, archers, or cavalry, so that if you're in need of one particular troop category you can bring them on instead of whatever is next in line.
It's also nice to see what kind of units the enemy is bringing to determine whether or not you should fight the battle. In the Viking campaign I decided to have my 500 vikings fight a Mercian force of 2500, primarily because I had an 8 star general and minimum Valour of 5, while they had a whole lot of peasants and a Valour ranging between 0 and 1 ;)
The pre-battle screen definately makes it easier to ensure you're using the right units in a battle to make a large general force and go on a march around the world.

Some might say that's somewhat cheesy but I hesitate to criticise as, some day, I'll have an absolute disaster on the field and go reaching for that gamesave myself. <shrug>
I just wanted to make it clear that this wasn't what I was suggesting the save facility is for. My game is a lot more stable these days (I got the video drivers sorted out) but I used to suffer the frustration of crash to desktop (CTD) or the whole PC rebooting, sometimes in mid-battle - very frustrating on occasions where I'd won and was just issuing mopping-up orders. If this (or a power failure, say) happened in the midst of a series of battles, all on the same turn, with the original version of the game you'd have to fight ALL of them a second time, possibly with different results. With the new version, you have the luxury of at least being able to resume from whichever one you were in the middle of.

In agree. I had a battle with the Mongols where I think I had superior numbers. I had setup my battle lines, but then some mis clicks (putting some of my cavalry right in front of the line of spear, and my entire spear line also seemed to turn 90 degrees meaning it was no longer an straight and ordered battle line) and without realizing it clicked Begin. I also started the battle very close to the enemy, and therefore I didn't have enough time to get the cavalry out of there. The cavalry routed, and which subsequently caused the entire army to rout. Very annoying. I hadn't saved the game at that time either so I was left with either letting that defeat stand or go back a few turns to my last save game. I chose to go back a few turns instead.
