Do you drink vodka or gin martinis?
Also, what else do you like in your martini?
I like a dirty martini (as in with some brine) made with good gin and 3 blue cheese stuffed olives.

give me a beer - and I'll shut up.

I don't drink martinis. I take my liquor straight-up.
Also, gin tastes like mouthwash to me, and vodka just tastes like rubbing alcohol, so I don't even drink the primary ingredients of a martini.
Jimmy Morrison said it best when he said, "I'm a backdoor man."

come on, my martinis are basically liquor straight up. I only use a little brine. And I like alcohol soaked cheesy olives.
You should give it a try. Except you don't like gin or vodka so I guess my attempt to convert you fails at that point.

Do you like pickled eggs as well?

Do I like pickled eggs?
er, yeah, actually. Usually after a good session involving lots of beer but yeah nonetheless.

You got there first, i was gonna say that!
Why add somethig to your Vodka?

why add something to your vodka?
why not?
plenty of people use mixers to disguise the vodka taste so that they can get drunk easily, at least a vodka martini is basically a glass of vodka with a vermouth soaked olive. More dressing up straight vodka than anything else.

All ingredients and tools stored in freezer at roughly 10 degrees fahrenheit.
Shaker, no ice, for mixing.
Bombay Saphire.
French Vermouth, one atomizer misting per 2 shots gin.
Serve in classic martini glass, 3 olives (no brine).
I prefer a cocktail sword, but find toothpicks adequate for the olives.
Seamus
P.S. Friend and I mixed a big batch and had a video festival. All 3 of the original "Thin Man" flicks back to back. Whenever they quaffed on screen, so did we. Finished the flicks, slept well - but a good deal longer than usual. ~;) Ahhh, the old grad-school days had their charm.

yep, Bombay Saphire is good stuff (although I've been drinking Hendrick's lately).
Your big batch: did you have the classic martini jug? because it would be awesome if you did.
Edit: I also agree with the martini glass because it would basically be a glass of gin with some floaty bits if you used a hi ball or the like.
you're typical dry martini is dry gin and dry vermouth, about 3 parts to 1
thats if i remember correctly and thats the way i take it, shaken.

Gin, for sure. Vodka is for people who don't want any distractions, such as flavour, on their way to getting smashed. No olive. More vermouth than Seamus, a lot less than Dessa. Room temprature gin, and ice in the shaker (not the glass, obviously), so I'd wind up with a drink a tiny bit less strong than Seamus.
Bombay Sapphire is my favourite London gin, I alternate with Plymouth depending on how I am feeling but to be honest after one or two of either I couldn't begin to tell the difference. Be fun trying though...

I must admit that I'm with Seamus on the minimal Vermouth.
Yes, it sounds like fun trying to differentiate between gins, I may give that a try sometime.
Just Martini on its own. With a cherry, or a lime.
Taffy_is_a_Taff
09-26-2005, 15:58
When you say Martini on its own do you mean the vermouth that says MARTINI in big letters on the bottle?
No, just pure (like drinking petrol) Martini. ~;)
j/k, yes it's that, which I guess is mixed with...?
Taffy_is_a_Taff
09-26-2005, 21:03
you mix the vermouth with either gin or vodka to make a martini, hence the poll question.
Jimmy Morrison said it best when he said, "I'm a backdoor man."
I'm pretty sure that had nothing to do with alcohol. At least...not directly.
I also drink everything straight, so no martinis for me. Pickled eggs are nice and manly though. I haven't had one in ages...

is that Jimmy Morrison reference being used to hint at booze enemas?

Well if you are taking your alcohol like that I wouldn't waste good Bombay Sapphire. Gilbeys or Gordons would be perfectly good enough. the exact amount of vermouth would be less critical too.
I still say you should leave out the olives though.
Bottoms up.
;-)
well i wasn't sure about the proportions, i haven't made martini's in ages, i really like vermouth though, so its not uncommon for me to overdo the vermouth a little bit...
it could be 5-1, its majority gin i know that for sure.

I understood that a 'Martini' had to be made with vodka, if it was made with gin it was called a 'gin and it'...or perhaps I'm mistaken?
(or maybe that's when it's made with red vermouth)
Anyway back to the question. I like it both ways as long as it's free. ~

you know I always thought it was the other way around.
I thought that gin was the traditional martini drink. Hence the term "vodka martini" rather than "gin martini".
I am now uncertain.

I'm fairly sure that Gin martinis are the original, though 007 drank Vodka, didn't he? I just drink beer, myself. It lasts longer.
An alcohol enema is a new one to me. I've seen people dropping Vodka into their eyes, mind. Not something which seems an especially good idea.

I used to know somebody who would inject themselves with vodka (or so they claimed anyway, they were definitely injecting themselves with something on nights out).
I have a word for that: it starts and ends with a "T" and has a "wa" in the middle. (Hope that makes it around the moderators.)

There are some stupid people out there. Why can't they just drink the alcohol? (Then again, Vodka tastes so awful I can understand not wanting to drink it... but why not go for some Irish Whiskey?)

I believe that it is gin that takes the biscuit...vodka is for the chavs,,,,so I have it on good authority.......

oh, and the reason that guy injected vodka was so that it would get into his bloodstream quicker therefore he would get drunk quicker (or so his theory goes)......which may explain why he was found collapsed early in the night a few times.

Me and my mates were pretty stupid when we were teenagers. We had this hobby to take "sniffers" .We sniffed Tequila or Vodka.I dont recommend it. The best way to consume alcohol is to drink it.:sweatdrop:

Bombay Sapphire, dry, but not extra dry. As many olives as I can con the bartender out of.
I do not drink Manhattens (the whiskey version, using sweet vermouth). If I'm going to drink whiskey, it's almost always Bourbon, and I almost always drink it neat. I add a drop of water from a stand alone glass of water I ask, to release the flavor. Occasionally, I go with Powers (an Irish).

I quite like Manhattens, if you can get over the facts that (1) its a terrible waste of good whiskey and (2) Cocktails, especially red ones, are basically girls drinks. (I think this rule sort of doesn't apply to Martinis since 007 drank them, even if his were made with vodka not gin)
If only Ian Fleming had made him drink Singapore slings, what a gay iconic he could have been...
