View Full Version : Crusade to Nowhere
Not too sure how this happened.
Started a crusade stacked in Provence.
Have port in Tuscany and safe waters, with ships all the way to Crete.
By the time I got to Tuscany I was excommunicated.
Now my troops don't seem to be able to move - either by land or sea.
Should I disband them, are they unable to use ships to travel, why wouldn't I be able to travel by land?
Cheers,
Pick up the crusade and move it to any of the highlighted provinces. If the faction whos land you are on has ships all the way to your crusades target that is the only province to which they can move.

That is my dilema, NO PROVINCE is Highlighted only the Tuscany Province I already occupy.

Have you checked so that no provinces at all between your current position and the goal of the crusade is highlighted?
I've never heard of the problem but it sounds like a glitch, excommunicated factions cannot Crusade and apparently the game switches off the Crusade engine that determines pathways etc when your excommed. I remember once having problems Crusading to Naples from Castille, the Papacy kept taking it and losing and I lost about 3 Crusades because "the province is now back in the hands of Catholicism" or something like that.
IIRC, Crusades cost no upkeep (or maybe minimal upkeep~ ). There is no real need to disband them (is that even possible without destroying the Chapter House?) as this will only hit your Kings influence. I suggest just sitting tight and getting "re-communicated" as quickly as possible to minimise the losses you're army will take from desertion.
edit:
Getting recomunicated
There are only two ways to do this.
1. Let your king die (or kill him). When your king dies your faction is recomunicated. Drastic but helpful.
2. Wait for the Pope to die. Popes often take a while to die of disease so why not give them a helping hand? Send swarms of assassins over to kill the Pope until you succeed. You could also try burning him with a Grand Inquisitor, but this is harder, after all he is the Pope
Only place that is highlighted is Tuscany, so I keep picking the marker up in one corner of Tuscany and putting it down on another corner...futile - seems like a bug...
Maybe try your autosave feature, re-load and see if you can see what went
wrong. I had to try many, many different tactics to 'semi' master the
crusading..... as soon as I would figure out one thing, another problem/roadblock would occur :dizzy2: .

I take it you're crusading to Crete.
Have you checked that your sealane is still open, without any enemy ships blocking it?
You can check it by pressing V, green seas are passable, red are blockaded.

What about what lugh said:
excommunicated factions cannot Crusade
Vajk said he started moving the crusade, got excommunicated, and then lost control of the crusade.

Assasinate the pope and continue on with the crusade.

Assasinate the pope and continue on with the crusade.
Now you're talking my language. :charge:

Well, I've learned something, at least. That is, crusades aren't instantly vapourised by being excommed when part-way there. :book:
Vajk,
you didn't say what the Crusade's target province is?
If it is somewhere in the Holy Land, then the problem could simply be that you cannot see the highlighted province (the 'allowable move') and Tuscany on the screen at the same time.
Pickup the crusade then, keeping the mouse button held down, force the screen to scroll to the right by bumping the cursor on the edge of the screen until you've scrolled the map far enough to see an available move. You must have had to do something similar in order to specify the target when you launched the crusade to begin with, so try it again now.
The acid test is 'stack autopilot' - pick it up and drop it on the destination. When you press end year, it will make whatever move is considered legitimate.
The hazard of this is that it might decide to move overland instead, possibly into lands held by a faction who refuse to let it pass through and force you into an unexpected battle instead. Not good.
You said you got excommed. Can you recall what the most recent Papal Warning was about? Did it specify a faction whose lands you had to vacate within 2 years?
I've had this happen before. I don't know if its because you are excommed but try killing the pope/your king. You can't disband it either. What you can do though is destroy your Chapter House. When you do that, it disbands the crusades from it.
