View Full Version : Playing Total War or not?

It's Backroom confession time!
http://www.my-smileys.de/smileys2/-47.gif
Do you play any of the Total War games at present? If so: which ones?
If not, did you play any in the past? If so, why did you quit?
If you never played them, what are you doing here?
Like most polls this one is completely useless, except that anything you say can and will most certainly be used against you.
I played both S:TW and M:TW for several years, but I hardly have the time to start, let alone complete a decent campaign anymore. Maybe I should say I don't make time anymore. For some time I have tried to keep up, now I have given up. I have erased all TW files, stashed my TW cd-rom's, deleted guides and related stuff.
The only headsoup I make these days is in the Backroom!... http://matousmileys.free.fr/baffe3.gif

Glad I'm not the only one that's curious about what my backroom mates are up to. Favorite faction would be Shhhhh! the French :embarassed: (I love heavy cavalry).
Right now, I'm in the midst of an extended English campaign. As for the time issue, this might be a bit anally retentive, but I have a solution Adrian. A timer & a notebook... I keep copious notes on everything I'm thinking so when the time is up, I can pick up the next night where I left off.

M:TW and some R:TW, but no more, WoW has found a home in me ~:)
I stopped playing M:TW online, because it was hard to find a decent game after R:TW came out. I stopped playing R:TW, because, firstly, I hated the MP; secondly, the campaign was too easy when you fought the battles against the compy; and thirdly, I just don't like the gameplay of the battles as much.

I play MTW and RTW, and am currently nearing the end of a fantastic campaign as the Julii, with almost every faction, except Sarmatia, Seleucid, and Armenia at war with me, and I'm still winning.
I have a relatively new file on the Napoleonic mod for MTW as the British, and my 2500-strong Highland Infantry Division currently rampagin through Burgundy, and my Light Brigade, of about 300 Hussars and 200 Light Dragoons and supporting artillery led by my King have just landed in Portugal, and a British Army of the Pyrenees has been established of about 3000 regular infantry of the line, 200 Life Guards, 400 Royal Dragoons and Hussars, 500 Light Infantry of the Line, 150 Green Jackets, and a mighty 80 artillery pieces are preparing to invade Spain.
I'm back onto RTW maybe 1 or 2 times a week. I haven't played MTW for a few weeks since I was forced to reformat my HD, but before long I'll have it reinstalled and MedModded up, cuz the battles are just better. ~D

I reloaded RTW a week ago. I've been playing the Hellenic Total War mod for a couple of months now and before that, MedMod (which rules BTW). But, I think I'll go back to MTW. Is there a STW mod that uses the MTW load? That would be sweet. I looooooooove STW, but for some reason I can't get Mongol Invasion to run. Man, but I have to say that MTW and STW are sooooooooooooooo much better than that eye candy crap RTW!!! ~D

Currently I have a campaign running with the Turks in M:TW and one with the Germans in R:TW

1. Do you play any of the Total War games at present? No
2. If so: which ones? --
3. If not, did you play any in the past? STW, MTW, RTW (for a short time.)
4. If so, why did you quit? RTW lacked the depth that the previous two games had.
5. If you never played them, what are you doing here? --

Still playing M:TW in fact.
I'm into mods at the moment, they keep the game fresh for me. I'm currently having a ball playing as the Burgundians, teaming up with the English and kicking French butt wherever those sissies may hide. :duel:

I can't play anymore, plus I lossed a lot of interest. I have school and other things to worry about and TW games take up so much time once you start. You all know that I'm sure.
I might revisit RTW for the hell of it, but I doubt I'll do it anytime soon.
I just like to post here because I found the discussions are occasionally interesting. Is that a crime? :embarassed:

I played
STW - never achieved to win a game. I usually killed all other daimos (sp?) with uber geisha, and quickly ended up quite bored after fighting load of rebels/ronins.
MTW - Wasted a good load of hours on that game. Won a game with the Almohads, the Almoravid and the Byzantines with Super Mod (early). Won as the Welsh with VI. Never achieved to win as the french, cause of boredom.
RTW - Played a few hours with both vanilla and RTR. I spent much more time modding the game than playing it.
No playing anymore, but I expect to get back on business when BI, EB or AoVaF are released.
Louis VI, are you playing SuperMod or XL ?

Thunderball?
I've got MTW and RTW. At the moment I'm waiting for EB or BI before I pick up RTW again, and I'm busy with a Polish campaign in MTW (gotta love starting small!); usually less than an hour each evening though, I've got plenty of other things to work on.

My interest in TW really took off with the PBMs here at the Org. I very much admire the TW engine for battles, but find it hard to motivate myself through a long solo campaign. Splitting it up the campaign into alternating reigns with other Org members was an inspired idea and so I had a lot of fun with MTW.
I agree with much of the grumbling about RTW in the Org. It certainly seemed to kill PBEM. However, one thing I found was that it was easier to finish an SP campaign. I guess the 50 provinces thing is just much more realistic than "conquer the world". But also the nature of the campaign map perhaps avoids some of the more fatiguing encounters in STW and MTW. However, after a while, I found RTW lacked challenge and lost interest for quite sometime.
Lately, I've discovered Rome Total Realism (and the VH campaign option plus a few house rules) and that has re-invigorated my interest. It makes TW much closer to a historical wargame than before, but retains the core gameplay we liked in STW and MTW. With EB on the horizon, I am more interested in TW games now than ever.

The one thing that tends to keep me from starting new campaigns is the unrealistically weak starting units of the factions. If I've just ended a campaign involving Chivalric knights and pikemen I'm hardly going to enjoy starting a new campaign with peasants; it's almost boring in comparison. In MTW this wasn't too much of a problem due to the option of choosing the starting periods, but RTW lacked this option.

I am still playing sure, but RTR 6.1 is my fourth game right now (the other three are console games). I play when I am watching a TV show, like football.

Because MTW was crashing, I loaded RTW again to give it a try. While different to MTW, it is worth playing still. I will try the RTR mod after I have played a couple of campaigns.
I have stopped playing R:TW, but I still play Medieval every once in a while. I'm having trouble getting a few consecutive hours to play though, which cuts into my campaign time.

I've never played STW, and was an MTW addict. With frequent relapses. I think I'm going to continue my Northumbrian (VI) campaign (hard!).
Rome: Total War was less compelling, though with EB I think I'll rediscover it. And BI.
And EB + BI!

I've played all of them, except for MI, never knew it had come out. :embarassed:
I currently only very rarely go back to STW, go back to MTW every now and then and would be playing a fair amount of RTW, but Hearts Of Iron II has stolen my gaming time so I will be driving my Panthers through Russia instead. I've already taken Stalingrad, Moscow and Leningrad with the Poles, Austrians, Italians, Danes and Flemish supporting my drive with obsolete infantry, on to Baku! :charge:

I still play MTW frequently. Haven't for the last month or so, but I've had other things going on. I've currently got Viking Horde's XL Mod, and BKB's Super Mod loaded onto my hard drive.
I've still got the downloads for Hellenic Total War, Fall of Rome, Napoleonic, and the old MedMod stored on my computer.
When Wes W's new MedMod is finished I'll give that a go.
I'm also looking forward to trying some of the RTW mods that are being developed. The EB mod and Blue Lotus look particularly good.
So, yes, I do still play.

I played R:TW as late as last week, well, the RTR mod of it. My Pontus campaign finally got to a close after my faction leader fought a pitched battle outside Rome. Praetorian Guards are incredibly hard to kill, especially when you get attacked before your heavier armies can catch up. Four chariot archers? Three Cretan archers? Three Illyrian mercenaries? Assorted crappy mercenary H-t-H troops? Against Romans with lots of gold chevrons? ~
The chariot units were down to two, my general's bodyguard had shrunk to ten men from the 57 he started with and the footsloggers were all but wiped out. But the sons of Pontus thriumphed! ~D
I still play MP VI everyday. SP is too boring after MP. RTW mp sux and MTW isnt as good as VI. Why play the rest when you can play the best?

VI is the best game I've ever played. I uninstalled STW after I tried the STW for VI mod, that's the only campaigning that I do. Try to get on daily for a game with Gawain.

Playing RTW RTR at the minute, well not right now as I'm at work ~;) , took me about three weeks to get the game uninstalled and re-install it with RTR 6.1, other that that I play EVE now and then but will switch to Roma Victor when it's released, I refuse to pay for more than one MMORPG at a time.
I still play - occasionally. Had a great blast of STW in the summer - that game is still awesome imo.
Haven't played MTW for a while but know I will return to it sooner or later.
Playing a RTR game on and off at the moment. BI doesn't seem to be capturing my imagination and I probably won't buy it - until its discounted.
I am excited about the era of the next full game though. I hope it's got gunpowder and canons and a workable multiplayer campaign.
I have STW and MTW stashed on the shelf and are currently still at my first campaign in RTW as Julii (is that a year now??).
Too little time for recreation results in prioritising…

Wow, 51 votes and counting! This must be the most representative Backroom poll we have had in quite a while.
And the result will be used against anyone who suggests that Backroomers have drifted away from the .org main stream. Over 3/4 are still playing the games and mods or waiting for BI to come out.
:charge:
The only two games I play consistently are M:TW and the IL2 flightsim series.
R:TW is kind of boring for me. M:TW still surprises me and keeps me up late at night. Going to try out the XL mod soon, I heard it's good fun.

But now, BI came out, so only BI for me. ~D

Yeah, do try it. Highly recommended. XL is probably the mod that I've spent the most time playing. It's my first choice for MTW now.
By the way, Viking Horde just released a patch for the XL mod a few days ago. Nothing big, just tidying things up a bit.

I went to Bootcamp for 3 months, and am currently at School of Infantry, as such I do not have a whole lot of computer access (except on weekends.) I'm planning to get a laptop soon, so hopefully I'll be able to play more in the future, but not RTW, I had some really bad experiences the first time and will probably be playing MTW or STW.

Played Medieval to death, got addicted and eventually sold off my CD because I decided it took waaay to much of my time.
RTW was a nice game, it had some nice new features but at the same time I was really pissed they threw away so many good features of MTW and made the AI so crappy.
Since a month or so I'm having fun with RTR. It's amazing how they made such a great mod within the limits of the old game.
Never tried multiplayer, but I figure I should one of these days. Are there enough people who play RTR online though? Dunno if I'd be willing to reinstall vanilla RTW 1.2 just to go online.
