On the internet lousy writing seems to be endemic, often filling sites with the kind mistakes which should be inexcusable. This constantly annoys me. Which kind of mistakes do you hate the most? Not just on the net either, any bad spelling goes.
For me it has to be confusion between their, there and they're. Honestly, it's not that hard!

All of them. I hate it. I was recently reading some of the regiments' websites on www.army.mod.uk; the spelling was atrocious, and the grammar even worse. I go through things in my mind correcting bad grammar and spelling. I once went through a friend's English essay, marking in punctuation and spelling mistakes...

A language should be spoken and written the way it should be..
I just hate the chat stuff in general, however nothing annoys me more than that crappy invention : lol
You hit the bullseye with some sense of humor but the replier is as lazy as to spare you no more than these three letters: "L", "O", "L". Sounds annoying, dull, insincere and stupid to me..

I have never used the word and never will..

Hmmmm, the most annoying thing is generally posts where people cannot be bothered with capital letters. I'm pedantic enough as it is but posts like this annoy me (I have made it up, it's not a quote):
i agree wit u, but i fink that the gaul are a harder campign than the julii even tho they have babrian units tht r teh gr8est!!!!one1111!!!!

I have seen this one often on forums: "I of"
I suppose it's meant to be "I have"? It took a while before I understood what those people tried to say, until I read the sentences aloud. :wink:

What do you expect? The internet is flooded with bad spelling because the idiots who mainly use it are kids who haven't paid attention in school, or are fat people too lazy to make a little effort to spell properly, and probably look like this:

the confusion about their and there. This is (most?) often seen at native english speakers - I wonder if it's because our (non native english speakers) grammar teachers pounded our heads with the difference?

Exactly. A lot of native English speakers make that sort of mistake, whereas with a little thought it's easy enough to avoid. The occasional typo or clumsy sentence is understandable but consistent mistakes of a basic kind (particularly in native speakers) are inexcusable.
A lack of capitals is also annoying.

Very probably. Most of the grammar I ever learned at school was in French and German lessons.
A few weeks ago I had to look over some CVs for some people from our Mumbai office coming over to the UK for a short term assignment. I commented to my boss that they had the odd error, but nothing unreasonable for someone with English as their second language, and she assured me they were far better than most of the ones she saw from recent UK graduates.

That man made me cry. Unfortunately, it's probably true. After all, they never move, and they just waste their minds jabbering nonsense.
By the way, waht the hell does IIRC mean? I see this all the time, and it never seems neccesary, because it just appears in a complete thought. It makes less sense than AOI.

i tend to always write in lowcaps, whether it's english, german (where nouns have to be in BIG) etc - simply a lazy style I have. probably a bad habit -however, in school assignments, of course, I use the formal grammar.

Sometimes bad spelling does get on my nerve as well, but you have to consider a few things when ranting.
1) Some people aren't ignorant about spelling, they just type really fast and sometimes make mistakes.
2) I learned an important lesson from Gregoshi about people on these forums. They come from all around the world and all they want to do is join into our wonderful discussions. They just don't speak english, but they try hard I'm sure.
3) Some people are young and spelling is just hard for them.
Now, I will not lie, when I'm rushing or just feeling lazy I may get a homophone error, but it's not that bad is it?:dizzy2:
That's just my opinion.~:cheers:

What's AOI?
The letters AOI appear over a hundred times in the Song of Roland; nobody knows what they mean. What makes it even more frustrating is that they are randomly placed after scentences and paragraphs. That's how I feel when I look at some of this "l33t/pwn/iirc" crap.

The problem seems to be writing the word as it sounds and not how it is spelled. Perhaps there is not enough reading and writing in today's school curriculums. I find that these mistakes can be remedied by reading anything properly written.

When i type fast. I make spelling errors all the time.I think it´s mostly because in my native language the words are pronounced the same way they are written.~:)
Bad spelling can be annoying, especially for us who are not native English speakers.
If someone is writing a difficult word and spells it horribly,the meaning is lost to us who doesn’t know all the English words.
We try to find it in a dictionary but to no avail. We then have to decipher what it really should be spelled like to get the meaning.
If someone like Pindar should misspell words in some of his more tongue-twisting posts, the meaning would be totally lost.
I can`t stand posts without capitals. People know how to use capitals, yet they don`t use them.

You know what strikes me as strange is that you are all complaining about bad spelling and grammar and then if Abokasee mutters some garbled and incomprehensible message and everyone starts laughing their heads off like some big private joke and then look down and shake their heads sadly at those who don't get it, as they would to the village idiot. Then they would say something to the extent of "Well it's like like ironic, innit, like sort of postmodern art you know what I'm saying?"

I have to agree with 1) and 2), but 3) is not really understandable for me.
I am a 15 year old german and most people on the internet are about (+ - 1 year) my age, now one wouldn't expect a german to speak and write nearly error free, as we have very few encounters with the english language through the medias here, but come on? I'm not a wonder child, and if it's possible for a young german like me, then it should surely be possible for 'children' in my age with english as their main language to spell correctly, or at the least use correct grammar and punctuation where it is necessary.
And I do not have any problem with spelling mistakes, as long as it is quickly understandable. Although I often find myself irritated and slowed down by things like "U" and "Me 2" or something, it's not the worst thing.
What REALLY annoys me, is to see official game sites with obvious spelling mistakes. I mean come on? If you're making an internationally or nationally accessable web-site then you should at the very least make a darn spellcheck in word!That's not too much, is it?
Oh and I totally understand when people use phrases like "lol" or "Rofl", I find myself using "Rofl" sometimes too, when something is really funny. I just got used to it, and I find myself not too disturbed by it.
Thanks for reading ;)

I had made a post about this quite a long time ago with the most common spelling and grammar mistakes one can spot on forums. Obviously it didn't please people since nobody replied to my post ~D
Here's my list:
- It's (verb) / its (possessive determiner). I don't know why, but most of the English speakers I see can't get it right although the difference is obvious;
- the notorious they're / there / their;
- the lazy your / you're;
- and last but not least, the most common error, I think: then instead of than. This one unnerves me no end.
Whereas I criticise the natives of UK for their bad spelling, I must admit if you could read French you'd be mortified by the slaughter whenever people are writing in French online... That's not even spelling mistakes, it's completely different from the original language and can only be understood phonetically, that is, if you re-read it five times...
i don't capitalize primarily because i assume that capitalization originated in the first place because people had trouble determining where one sentence ended and another began; because of the variations in human writing style. that to my mind became moot with the advent of identical writing styles. i.e. typewriters and keyboards. no matter which one of us is writing, it all looks the same. and its quite legible. so i see capitalization especially in informal settings like this, as not necessary. as long as the spacing is kept between sentences, i see no problem with it, and in fact i see the demise of the period at the end of a sentence as well, in the not too distant future. again, this only pertains to informal online communication.
i don't capitalize secondarily because i'm lazy.

The common mistakes occasionally disturb me, but otherwise I'm tolerant.
Though there is a problem with spelling things right in people nowadays. I am a non-native who only encountered a large amount of English less than two years ago, and I'm far above many other students in writing, both in context and grammar.
However, if there's something I hate, it's the l33t language. I couldn't even comprehend why people actually use them. Sheer stupidity, I say. Like that moron in the picture.

I fully support the individuals that speak against what we in Sweden call "apartwriting", which basically means that two words that are supposed to be compound or hyphenated are written as two words. E.g. "snow ball" instead of "snowball".
Other than that, I don't care about what's written as long as I comprehend what the author is trying to say.
