Humans vs Orcs: Total War Jetpack Edition

One forum poster on the TWC once referred to the next Total War game in sarcasm, Humans vs Orcs: Total War Jetpack Edition.

It is quite a reasonable estimate to think that this poster belongs in the “keep Total War real” club. However, imagine if this game was truly made. Disregarding the slightly Warcraftish theme, jetpacks adds a whole new dimension to Total War gameplay.

Hills become less important, units can now boost up hills without having to walk through all that length while under enemy arrow fire. The height advantage of hills is also gone. Instead of exhaustion from walking, perhaps we could have energy reserves? These run out after a while, and recharge slowly from solar power. At night, they don’t recharge at all! While they are used up, units have to walk, making it important to conserve energy.

Flanking and tactical maneuvering goes to a whole new level with jetpacks. Units can now boost themselves around, making mobility the order of the day. From the turtle like phalanx to the mobile legionaries, and now the modern blitzkrieg tactics, we have something new. Mobile air legionaries. Napoleon would be in heaven. With these units, the matters of flanking are changed. No longer can you surround a block of units, because the units around the center can jump out onto the sides. This opens up entirely new dimensions, actually just 1 dimension making the game 4 dimensional, and allows for the creation of entirely new strategies.

So folks, don’t write off Humans vs Orcs: Total War Jetpack Edition, it would probably prove to be quite entertaining.
