View Full Version : Creative Assembly Who plays 40K?

Looking at getting back into the modeling side to relax out of what I am doing at work.
Also making enough models to do a bit of Combat Patrols...
I've painted up about 1500 points of Dark Angels, but never actually played with the things. I've been trying to get my nine year old son to follow suit, but although he has a fair number of feral orks and tyrannids, he's preferred Warhammer Fantasy and lately computer games.

Rogue Trader??? I still have that book. Were you involved in the rules, the fluff, the artwork, or a combination?
Somewhere in a closet I have a large Space Wolves army painted up. I also have a pretty large World Eater army in various stages of paint and an unpainted Harlequin troop. Haven't played since ~1997. Can't find the time to paint either, that's really what I enjoyed. I have been playing Dawn of War some lately, it got me thinking about breaking out the brushes again. All my figures are 1st or 2nd edition though, not sure I could legally field an army in whatever version is current.

I have a huge army of Eldars, plus some Orks, some Space Wolves and Blood Angels.
I wanted to sell all my figs, but I spent so much time painting them, giving them names and background, I just gave up and they're now wait in a box.

Space Wolves forever! I've got about 2500 points worth painted, all told.
I haven't had a game for a while though.

Why does your choice of army not surprise me, BKS? Maybe it's just your username, but I have an image of you and Beirut with his axe making a pretty mean HQ choice in a Space Wolves army.

I suspect that illustrates one reason why many people here love the Total War games. For all the mass market 3D graphics real time strategy whatever spiel, at heart they seem to be designed by wargaming geeks like ourselves. ~

Warhammer 40,000...
I am more a fantasy person but I have a 1,500 point ultramrine army, yup...I'm as boring as heck

I managed to assemble a pretty big (2500-3000 points) Ultramarines army (mostly unpainted, unfortunately). I haven't actually played the game for quite a while, however.

It's one of those things I've always wanted to start on but have never been able to make the time for. Other things always seem to pop up.
More of a CBT guy myself. Megamek absolutely rules.

Well I haven't played in years, barring trying to teach Wasabi how to play, after comming home to find my Flamer Marine painted in pastel pink...
Played Rogue Trader, Necromunda (the White Dwarf complex version) and after that I played more roleplaying games and LARP (World of Darkness mainly)... also used to play DnD.
However since moving to Sydney in 2000 I have done no games, just painting and that stopped after going to Taiwan.
One of the reasons I frequent these forums orginally was finding fellow smart strategy players.
Been playing Dawn of War and my brother in law has been making mecha models... so I might get into Tau... but I'm not sure if the new rules are as engaging anymore.
The best (and worst) feature of the older rules was the flexibility and creativeness you could put into your army list, and into your models. But it left the door open to severe cheese, so GW eventually had to dumb it down for balance. There was something to be said for old-school Ork players, you either won or lost in spectacular fashion, depending on the die rolls.
I started out with Space Hulk and reading a friend's copies of White Dwarf in college. Eventually got sucked into 40K proper and Epic. When I moved up here to Virginia, there was a GW store not too far away, so there were always players around. I ended up mainly playing 40K and Warhammer Fantasy, but eventually my job and other interests made me stop. I also think I was going blind trying to paint detail :dizzy2: .
Not sure where I would find players these days, I think the store closed down and the players at the local game shops don't seem like the type of people I'd want to play against (too immature, too cheesy, too serious, etc.). Plus, I can only imagine the crap I'd get from my girl for pushing little pieces of plastic and metal around a table for 3-4 hours, or hiding in a room painting for hours on end.

I was thinking of getting into it, but after I saw that the guys who make the figures practically change them every year or so, it doesn't seem like a worthwhile investment.

On the plus side, the new models tend to be vastly better looking than the old ones. The quality seemed to take a massive leap up around the time of the sixth edititon of Warhammer Fantasy. Have a look some of the older models - e.g. the old Dark Elf corsairs - on E-bay if you don't believe me. Hideous. The newly released Wood Elf archers are a case in point.

They are getting better? About the time I quit playing, the models were getting a little ridiculous. They started upsizing all the accessories (weapons and helmets) which made the models look a little silly. Of course, I'm probably biased here since I had a Chaos Fantasy Battle army from the Realm of Chaos era which, in my not so honest opinion, were some of the best models they ever made. The detail, the evilness, ahhhh.:smitten:
Now I'll have to take a look at the online catalog to see what the new models look like. Gah!
Well, they still have disproportionately sized weapons and hands etc. That's kind of a house style.
If you want to see "realistic" figures, look at their Lord of the Rings range - they are very nice.
But have a look at the three Elf ranges (High, Dark and Wood) and you'll see Warhammer Fantasy has some pretty nice looking models. For example, I think these are awful purty (shame they are too useless to warrant me buying for my army):

I just had a look to the Wood Elves figures, and yeah, they have quite improved. Too bad there's no Ariel special character anymore.
Edit : Huh, I don't like the Ogre Kingdom. When will they make an middle eastern looking army ?
When will they make an middle eastern looking army ?
It's a perennial question. No time soon, I guess. What I have heard is that they don't want to do something that is too obviously a copy of Samaurai or Chinese military history; nor something that plays like the Renaissance style Empire army. I don't understand this - from a commercial point of view, I would imagine an Eastern style army would sell like hot potatoes. But they want something distinctive, like the Ogre Kingdoms. Shame OK is as ugly as hell.
Hmmm, you wouldn't happen to know why they split the Undead and Chaos armies into Tomb Kings/Vampire Counts and Beasts/Hordes of Chaos respectively? That probably trashes my Chaos army, I used daemons, warriors, and beastmen combined.
I guess most of the new models look fine. Chaos seems a little bland (but again I'm biased here ~;) ). It's nice to know they offer the basic troops in plastic packs, not only are they cheaper, but you can usually create a variety of poses with the plastic models. I probably would have never gotten started in 40K if it wasn't for the old plastic Mark VI armor space marine 10-pack. No way I could have afforded lead back then.
When will they make an middle eastern looking army ?I think the Chaos Dwarves circa 1995 were supposed to be middle eastern, but the less said of them the better. They were terrible models. The Tomb Kings have an Egyptian look to them, very much like the second level of Diablo II.

I was rather thinking about an Haradrim looking like army. If I remember the background of Warhammer Fantasy precisely, there are some kind of Arabian kingdoms south ou Bretonnia (near Nagash's lands), where Bretonnians use to crusade...
The models still unbelieveably expensive?

2500 points with the third edition lists. I've got a fair number of models, although the Land Raider soaks up some of the points.
I used to :)
Havent played it for about 12-13 years though. Around 2002 i sold my books on ebay. I had a very shabby copy of Chapter Approved, a few pages missing missing, and the bindings gone completely - just 70 or 80 loose leaves. It went for almost $100!!

I used to play it, with an Imperial Guard (Vahallan Ice Warriors = luv) army, long time ago. But the price to quality ratio on the minis is so horrible that I dont even bother anymore. If I want cheap, high-quality minis, I go to Reaper with their Dark Heaven line.

No, you should be still ok. There are three types of Chaos troop - beasts, mortals and daemons but you can mix them up fairly flexibly. (If you have a mortal general, non-mortals count as special choices or some such).
Tomb Kings and Vampire Counts are different armies - think the Mummy vs Dracula.
Chaos seems a little bland
Well, as a High Elf player, I despise Chaos but I do like the Chaos mortals mini range. How can you not like:

And getting more expensive all the time. The Lord of the Rings game is not too pricey, but it's a skirmish kind of affair. I suspect Total War players would feel more at home with the ranked combat of Warhammer Fantasy. There, you are probably looking at £300 for a decent army. And many weekends painting.

I bet a RTW player would rather be playing Warhammer Ancient Battles, with a Ancient era book.
Since I'm kinda in a W40K frenzy right now, I bought W40K dawn of war. And well, it kicks ass. I'm not sure it will not get boring later, but I'm having lot of fun hammering orks with these awesome looking eldars (though I think they looked better in the previous edition).
I'm going to try out some mod such as the one with the women space marines (witch hunters or somthing like that)
Glory to the Dark Gods! Skulls for the skull throne!!
..err..Sorry... sometimes i get too caught up in A Blood rage of Khorne.. I've got a World Eaters army, mostly of Berserkers, daemons, and even Karn the betrayer who i throw in every now and then when i can ~D. Used to play as a Space marine, and still have a small army of Ultramarines (who i set up and pose every now and then with my chaos guys) but "fighting for the Emperor" got old after a while. So i submitted to the Dark whims of the Blood God :leer: , and have been working to bring destruction to the vile Imperium of man ever since.
Or..As Karn says in battle... "Kill! Maim! Burn! Kill! Maim! Burn! Kill! Maim! Burn! Kill! Maim! Burn! Kill! Maim! Burn!"
ahh...music to my ears ~:)

To play 40k in Aus it works out at about a dollar a point once you add in paints and brushes. And this if for space marines, they are one of the cheaper sets to buy... it doesn't include special characters... they are the cheapest to buy per point.

I don't really want to think about the amount of money I sunk into WFB and 40K figures...~ After a while I had such a backlog of unpainted models I had to impose a moratorium, I had to paint 2 figures before I could buy 1. Kept me from getting into Wood Elves towards the end, which was probably for the better.

They look angry and burly enough, but they lack the little mutations and details that the old models had. Granted, these are plastic and would be easier on the wallet. I'll have to take my camera and post pics of some of my old troops. GAH! The horde will be freed from it's plastic and foam prison, to see the light of day again....
I have enough orks to drown in (loads and loads and loads of grots) and a blood bowl team somewhere, although it got too expensive for me to keep up with so i'v not bought anything for a year or so....
I played mainly Gorkamorka if any of you know of it, it was a side game of Warhammer.
Badass. I wish they'd re-release it.
I have, I don't know, about 1500 points of orks, but I haven't finished painting or even assembling them all. It's been ages since I played the game, and my interest gradually declined. I got back into it long enough to finish my looted Basilisk when Dawn of War came out, but that's about it.
I still have my huge and highly successful Imperial Guard army in storage. Haven't played since the latest rules edition was released: They seemed flawed and less fun. Besides which I have less time and no worthwhile opponents. Been playing DoW though, which is fun.
Anyway the game I really liked was Necromunda, it was quicker and had more character and scope for personalisation. I even enjoyed it's horribly complex and detail predecessor (called Confrontation IIRC). Loved Bloodbowl too - such a laugh!
For whoever asked, the models are now even more expensive than ever. How kids afford them I don't know.

Parents. ~;p
How is Necromunda compared to Mordheim? I was considering them both at one point, and ended unable to decided which would best suit my interests.
Mordheim is essentially Necromunda with crossbows. IMO the sci-fi gangland setting of Necromunda works much better, Mordheim being just a way of shoe-horning in a similar game in for fantasy fans. Play Necro because its great fun and doesn't need a whole day! Also the roleplay and continuity elements maintain a healthy level of competition between players and generate their own stories. Oh and you only need a dozen models and a 4"x4" board as well (but lots of scenery is good).
Been looking through the GW website. Looks like they currently sell WFB, 40K, and LotR games, but have shunted their other games into a "Specialist Games" category. The cool part about this, is that you can download the rules from the web for free.
Battlefleet Gothic, Inquisitor, Mordheim, Warmaster, Epic 40K, Blood Bowl, and Necromundia.
http://www.specialist-games.com/default.asp
Looks like the latest rules, White Dwarf articles, FAQs, Errata, and miscellaneous stuff, all available for download. Guess they figured printing, packaging, distributing, and shelfspace for these games exceeded the cost of development. Pretty cool of them. Now if they would only do this for the full SpaceHulk rules...
Other variants of WFB and 40K are also available for download, you just need to look through those respective pages. So far I've found updated rules for WFB warbands, Lost and the Damned, and Harlequins. Maybe all this free stuff is why the figurines are getting pricier.~;)

Congratulation on the painting. I especially like the SW terminators, but I'm a bit biased when it comes to Space Wolves
Mordheim was good. Besides the initial outlay (which I split 50/50 with a friend anyway) and the paints I didn't spend anything on it.
Probably why GW don't try and sell this sort of thing anymore. Much better to make people buy armies rather than half a dozen men.

I have some of the "newer" Space Wolves Terminators (circa 1995?) with the furs and wolf-tails all over them. But I never got around to finishing the paint job on them, they are primed and base-colored, but they still need the highlighting and detail. Now that I think about it, I was supposed to paint the Space Wolves badge on the shoulder pads of these Termies. D'oh! :embarassed:
I cannot believe the number of unpainted/unassembled figures I came across last night. What was I thinking?~

Spacehulk Variant (http://uk.games-workshop.com/warhammer40000/space-hulk/1/)
Looks okay... kind of.
Preferred the one where they boarded the tyranid ships... the one that introduced scouts with hellfire heavy bolters... in the large mission mode you had 3 lines of attack, with forward, first wave, second wave and reserves... you were supposed to use scouts to explore (they could go through twice as fast) but the Tyranids could ambush the single team in the forward postion with Warriors or others and wipe out a scout team in no time... so just to surprise my brother I used Terminators in the forward position... the look on his face when he sprung the ambush. ~D

I ask because I was thinking about conveting a bunch of Scottish Highlander units for use in Mordheim. Maybe they'd look better with mohawks and lasguns?
Played a bit of 40k "regular", but played a lot of "Epic" for a time.

That was "Tyranid Attack" and "Space Crusade", right? Never did play those. Space Hulk got a little out of hand with the "Genestealer" psyker rules, but was fun and quick to play. Looked like those 2 games were very similiar.
I don't know how the kill-team rules work, but the scenery they have there is insane. Who has the time to build hallways, rooms, and all that stuff? Aside from people who get paid to do it...
Blimey lads - don't play blimming warhammer, play proper modelling games in proper periods, do wargaming!
Why? A fantastic setting is much easier to manage and removes all need for arguments over proper effectiveness and historically correct equipment. We do this for fun, after all.

Part of the fun is arguing about historical reality in the game and whether rules are correct. Warhammer is such a dicey, lucky, crappy game anyway.

I have done. I also own various Napoleonic and Ancient rulesets and models. But guess what? The GW games are so much more accessible - it was always easier to set up a game with the usual gang or, and most importantly, to introduce newbies to the hobby. Add into the mix the superior quality models (though at a price) and highly developed background universe as added attractions. GW games are often a gateway into other games. Don't be a wargaming snob.
