Any thought on Georges' speech today ?
http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/10/06/bush.tranhttp://script/

Some great insight there .
The government of Russia did not support Operation Iraqi Freedom, and yet militants killed more than 180 Russian schoolchildren in Beslan.

There you go absolute proof , Russia didn't invade Iraq , but still gets attacked .
Oh but they did invade Chechnya:dunce2:

Pretty weak speech. So much for all the juicy 'details' we were enticed with. I'd love to know more about the 10 averted attacks. Oh well.

Did Bush really say that? (I couldn't get your link to work). If so, that is nothing less than nefarious.

Who attacked first?

Chechnya gained it's independance in 1991. One of the first thing they did was attack Ethnic russians in the province. So Russia tried to assassinate the Chechnan "President" but failed miserably. Chechnya wanted an Islamic state, they had pogroms against Christians and Jews. Russia tried to liberate them at first. The first Chechnan war was a complete failure, due to the idiocy of the Russian leadership and corruption. Way to many people died, Grozno was a complete failure, etc. So, a few years later, Russia gives up. Then, Chechnya, wanting their independant Islamic state, attacks Degostan (or somthing of the type), a Russian province. Russia roles in, wipes Chechnya off the map, and leaves.

You consider Chechnan Actions justified? Ever hear the story where the mother of a Russian soldier went to recover the body of her son. The Chechnans showed her a tape of him being beheaded, then sold his head and his body to her, seperatly.

Or maybe the one about the Priest held hostage by Chechnans. They told him to tell Russian troops to stop fighting. Instead, he blessed them. They murdered him.

Are these the actions of civilized people? The Chechans would line in the paths of tanks, looking unarmed. Not wanting to massacre civilians (worst mistake in Russian history), Russian tank commanders opened the hatches to ask them to move. They molotov cocktailed the tanks, wiping out over three armored columns.

Now, Chechnan rebels bomb apartment complexes, destroy schools, and hold entire theaters hostage. Real civilized. And real deserving of mercy. :stars:

You were the one that linked them. See the post at the top of this thread, perhaps?

Besides, being as I know quite a few people from Russia, who have told me about the situation, in addition to my independant research, I daresay I know more about it than you. Thanks for the blatant, ignorant attacks by the way.

Didn't watch and haven't read the speech yet - so its best to refrain from commenting until I have done so. Maybe tonight after I get off of work.

OK - could we please quit these rather unpleasant exchanges and get back to topic - and the detour on the history to the Chechnya conflict is only marginally related to the original topic, the only important issue is that the Beslan attacks were linked to the Chechnya conflict and are completey unrelated to the Iraq invasion and what stance Russia has taken with regard to Iraq.

Which is why it is strange that Bush links it to the war on Al-Qaida .
Sufism is widely condemned by the Wahabbis so why would they be linked ?
The Chechens declared the creation of a Secular state , so where is the fundamentalist empire ?
It makes as much sense as members of the ex-governmnet in Spain still insisting that ETA is linked to Al-Qaida .
Therefore ...what a muppet...and thats without even going into his lines about Pakistan in that speech .

The Russians have been trying to 'pacify' that particular corner of the world for centuries, on and off. I'd say the hatred runs quite deep on both sides by now. Finnish soldiers serving there in the 19th century couldn't understand why they were killing the local sheepherders, but the Czar said it was important. :dizzy2:

It has been on-going since 1785 when the Chechens started waging a holy war against the Russians under Sheikh Mansur after Russian troops occupied the area.

So basically the fact that Russia didn't support the war in Iraq has nothing to do with them being attacked by an enemy they've been trying to kill for centuries ?

Well spank my arse and call me Nancy, reaaaaalllly ? ~

Yes, that's the point, but at least one person didn't know that, but might now.

I guess you're not familiar with the links between Chechnyan rebels and al-Qaeda then? They're pretty well documented from what I've read.

But even if there are links - why should the Chechnyan rebels/terrorists care about whether Russia was involved in the Iraq invasion or not?

There might be connections by I doubt that AQ has any actual influence on what the Chechnyans are doing.
