Cure for cervical cancer (http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,16851827-39555,00.html)

AN Australian scientist has developed the world's first cancer vaccine - a drug with the potential to save the lives of tens of thousands of women each year by preventing cervical cancer.

The vaccine - based on work started 15 years ago by Ian Frazer, director of the Centre for Immunology and Cancer Research at the University of Queensland - received a huge boost yesterday when researchers reported a 100 per cent success rate in final trials.
The results mean it could be on sale in Australia by the end of next year, after its developer, Melbourne drugmaker CSL, revealed the trial found it gave recipients 100 per cent protection against two strains of human papillomavirus, or HPV.

Together, the two strains cause about 70 per cent of cervical cancers.

Interesting that we are finding more of the things that cause cancers and ulcers are viruses and bacteria...

You know, some conservative will want to block this vaccine because it "permits a promiscuous lifestyle" or some other stuff like that.

You know, some liberal slut is prolly gonna take this and then abort her unwanted kid.

Get a grip.

Anyway, amazing break through. Cheers to AU.

This sort of thing is always good to hear. Let's hope it can be put to good use.

Having personally planned over a hundred tandem and ovoids cases for treatment of cervical cancer all I can say is thank god!

It's funny...I swear we knew about this viral component for a few decades. Makes you wonder why things take so damn long to come to fruition.

Truly. This really does sound like a good one. I saw a stat suggesting that this form of cancer still kills almost half of those diagnosed. Knocking this one off would be wonderful -- and maybe a step toward more.

Yes they found this 15 years ago.

I will have to post about the Aussie scientists named Nobel winners for med. this year. Similar thing with a stomach bug causing ulcers... I think these winners are the type that should be in charge of NASA... I will post the link in another thread.
