What tools do you use to do your modding of text files? Anyone using perl?

The search and find/replace features are much better than Notepad and it has a line counter - handy for quickly finding stuff from debug messages.

Small size, line numbers, tabs for multiple documents (useful for the associated files such that need simultaneous editing in RTW modding), quick navigation to saving/loading etc., wordwrap (of course), retains format, global replace can be selective...it's free.

It would be interesting to see the preferred tool of top modders. ;)

A traditionalist at heart, I use Notepad. But u guys seem to have some good programs there, I'll have to try them out.

I use the aforementioned Crimson Editor. It's great. I only wish you could rearrange the order of the tabs so you could always have certain files listed first if you happen to close one down and reopen it later.

Since BI, I've stuck with Notepad though. Does the job nice enough providing you don't want too many files open at once.


Oh, and another tool... CSDiff (http://www.componentsoftware.com/Products/CSDiff/download.htm). A great little free tool that lets you compare two text files for changes. Good if you're not sure what changes you made to the original CA files, or someone else's. I found it good for converting some of my pre BI mod files to the newer BI format, so I know what's different and how I need to update things. Or that's the theory anyway.

My main problem with Notepad (at least my version, 5.1) is that it bogs down horribly for really big files. And it doesn't allow much undoing, only one undo.

thanks for the link on TextPad. I downloaded the demo and was impressed by the Block selection tool.

I've been toying with perl (www.perl.com (http://www.perl.com)). I got asked by my boss at work to learn perl :book: to maintain some legacy code we use. Turns out total war text files are perfect to practice on!

Textpad also. WinMerge for some editing, but not the basic stuff.

I think there may have been a thread on tools of a more general nature but I cannot find it and need some advice.

I use Crimson Editor, ExamDiff/DiffDoc and Lupus Rename.

They're all excellent. But I need some tools/plugins that will:

1. display the modification date of a file in Windows Explorer that has been renamed and not necessarily had its contents edited (usually applies to graphic files).

2. Make folders to display the date of the last modified file within them

3. Allow me to copy filenames and their paths in text form from the Windows Explorer pane (useful for creating patch text file - I'm not going to type out all those file paths and names!)

Can anyone help? It would be much appreciated.

Try DirLister.

The format of the text file is not suitable for packing the patchs, but you can convert them easily with Word (be careful with the blank spaces at the end of the lines).
I've tried it only once, but it seems to work.

Excellent - unpack, add files to default ones, and repack of patch_1.pak for 1.5/1.6 works.

Thx to Monkwarrior for that tool - it saved a ton of time: oh, and Crimson Editor has an option to delete trailing spaces so no need to convert in Word.

I use TextPad as well. Works like a charm - its search (and find/replace) system isn't too hard to get the hang of, and it makes making lots of precise changes much easier than NotePad. The ability to search by line and column numbers is also quite nifty.

I have a question :

very often when modding this (or similar) message comes out :

I have tried text pad,MS Word with line count settings but can't get it all show up lines where error occured

any tips on how to set tex editor to show that up properly will be greatly appreciated

If I remember, press Ctrl+G in the Notepad to search a specific line.

When i have to make some big text changes i switch to Linux and use Kate.
Its incredible tool that lets you to work on many files in one window and/or on many parts of one file if you want to. Its extremely configurable.
The best Text editor i ever used.

Looks good!

Crimson Editor is the best I have found - it allows multiple file editing and coloured highlights too and other stuff I have not really explored (it gets rid of trailing spaces too which is very useful). It's free and if you click on "features" on the web page below you'll see the whole list of what it does...
