View Full Version : whats up with these **** popups?

I've been getting a bunch of bull**** popups here about cleaning my registry etc (I'm sure we all know what they really are). One disables my ability to close it without clicking on it to say no. All it can take to be infested with their spyware is to make one false click. I dont appreciate it. Damn I just got another bunch while trying to write this.

Advertising is one thing but I'm outa here until it changes.

Can you say whether you picked it up on this site SpencerH?

I'm not saying I've picked up spyware from here, but over the last week (or maybe more) there has been a constant onslaught from the pop-ups at this site that are the typical deceptive spyware garbage put on the web by low-lifes. I realize y'all dont directly control the pop-up content but it only takes one false move to end up with gator or some other 'legitimate' spyware on your PC and it can take a huge effort to get it back out. I like this site, but not enough to visit while this is going on. I know that apolyton had the same problems and they fixed it by switching advertisers.

I understand SpenerH, but I mean: are you sure this site distributed the pop-ups and that you didn't pick pop-ups up from somewhere else? And which pop-ups did you get? It's much harder/impossible to search/solve (either myself or host) when you don't know what is to be solved.

I guess it's possible that they're coming while leaving another site so I'll monitor the situation a bit more closely and get back to you. It's strange, but based on the onslaught yesterday I should've already had one but I haven't.

Maybe they came from another site, maybe it's part of some rotating advertising campaign. I guess it's even possible to have tailored advertising: time, country, browsing behaviour .. What was it about?

Use print-screen and take a picture of them, so we can see exactly what they look like. Sounds nasty.

Strangely enough, I havent had another batch since writing my warning about them.

Two things come to mind:

It was related to something hiding (now expunged by adaware) on my HD - but then why only pop-up here?

Other sites have complained and the advertisers have removed them from rotation.

In any case, I'll be quick to get the necessary info if they appear again.

EDIT: One last point that I forgot about which may also explain why I havn't got new pop-ups, I havn't been on the site as much.

Just to let y'all know, I havent had any further incidents here with gator-type pop-ups. Thats great, but a little unfufilling since I dont know why it happened or why it stopped.

I got some lightly dressed women too. But whether that was when the Org was down and they were there to entertain while waiting for it to come up again, I`m not sure..

I visited a site for a PHP script today, there were pop-ups there. Now I get those pop-ups and others while only having org windows running. Restarting the browser didn't remove them. I could be wrong of course, but I really think I picked something up there.

The host replied that they are working on cleaning the add rotation. So, things may improve.

Not if you have adware installed on your machine.

Then use ad-aware to get rid of the adwares.~;)

.
Ad Aware and Microsoft Spyware Cleaner. There are things either of which can't detect/clean.

I'm getting popup attempts here. I am loath to see what they are behind the blocker. Any porn and bye bye job.

Yeah I posted about this a month ago or so. A nasty little installer prog promoting MSspyware remover or something of all things. rofl?

And I currently have a nasty one right now. Its attempted to open IE 20 times already. My browser keeps blocking its url and about to run spybot. :duel: (ah... SpyBot search and destroy 1.4)

*Sigh* there goes my enjoyment of TheGuild forums for a little while...

Actually, anyone got advice how to block these even if you have your security/options set to high?

Cheers :)

oh, and g'day Papewaio I'm from Brisie myself :)
