Dang! I just found the link reading one of my favorite conservative whacko online publications (http://corner.nationalreview.com/) and thought this would be the perfect place to post it. But it seems QwertyMIDX stole my thunder. Are you a closet National Review reader? ~;p

Since the surprise has been spoiled, there's another idea I'll have to toss out.
solar death rays
shark-riding pirates with swords, that shoot laser beams

Sure? Archimede was famous for inventing naval war devices such as those. Dionysos, the tyrant of Syracuse, was better known for his revolutionary use of engineering and siege machines in his siege wars. Both of them lived in Syracuse, but 150 years separate them.

In any case, both were very able to do it.

Ah, you may wish to see this (http://www.stanford.edu/~scodary/tkam.htm). It all makes perfect sense now, doesn't it?
