View Full Version : Can the 6 Hats Improve the Org?

I'm just reading the book by Edward De Bono about the 6 Thinking Hats.
Has anyone got real life experience with his works?
Are they useful?
Do you think we could use them in the Watchtower to help improve the Org?
Do you have alternative methods to help us improve this place?
Regards,

Six Thinking Hats® is a simple, effective parallel thinking process (http://www.debonogroup.com/parallel_thinking.htm) that helps people be more productive, focused, and mindfully involved. And once learned the tools can be applied immediately!
You and your team members can learn how to separate thinking into six valuable functions and roles. Each thinking role is identified with a colored symbolic "thinking hat." By mentally wearing and switching "hats," you can easily focus or redirect thoughts, the conversation, or the meeting.
http://www.debonogroup.com/images/hat_white.jpgThe White Hat calls for information known or needed. "The facts, just the facts."http://www.debonogroup.com/images/hat_yellow.jpgThe Yellow Hat symbolizes brightness and optimism. Under this hat you explore the positives and probe for value and benefithttp://www.debonogroup.com/images/hat_black.jpgThe Black Hat is judgment - the devil's advocate or why something may not work. Spot the difficulties and dangers; where things might go wrong. Probably the most powerful and useful of the Hats but a problem if overused.http://www.debonogroup.com/images/hat_red.jpgThe Red Hat signifies feelings, hunches and intuition. When using this hat you can express emotions and feelings and share fears, likes, dislikes, loves, and hates.http://www.debonogroup.com/images/hat_green.jpgThe Green Hat focuses on creativity; the possibilities, alternatives, and new ideas. It's an opportunity to express new concepts and new perceptions.http://www.debonogroup.com/images/hat_blue.jpgThe Blue Hat is used to manage the thinking process. It's the control mechanism that ensures the Six Thinking Hats® guidelines are observed.

As you know, the difference between mediocre and highly effective teams lies not so much in their collective mental equipment, but in how well they use thier abilities to think and how well they work together.
Six Thinking Hats® helps actualize the full thinking potential of teams. And when used as a meeting management tool, the Six Hats method provides the disciplined process for individuals to be focused and to the point.
But possibly most important, it requires each individual to look at all sides of an issue.
Employees like the way the Six Hats method neutralizes employee rank in a meeting where several levels of employees are present. It also puts people who are quiet and reserved on an equal playing field with those who are more talkative and might monopolize a meeting.
Pertinent Applications (http://www.debonogroup.com/applications.htm) for the Parallel ThinkingT Process of Six Thinking Hats®

I© have been racking my Brain® about this, but I do not see any improvement whatsoever resulting from this. Besides, we are not a team and we are not trying to 'accomplish' something that would look good on a management®© chart.

Well we could use them to get more people in the chatroom. Although I did see Tosa, Spartakus, and COldKnight in there earlier, and me and Master of Puppets are in there now this is the exception.

You should try Kepner Tregoe or Six Sigma some time. :dizzy2: They are remedial troubleshooting/problem analysis for folks who can't seem to get out of the box. During KT's and 6 Sigma sessions you spend about 10 times as long and with far more people involved, to come to the same conclusion a skilled troubleshooter would have anyway.
We used to have KT's put on our backs when managers wouldn't listen or didn't understand on a major problem that was getting a lot of exec team level scrutiny. :furious3: The concept of KT is straightforward, but it is what a good troubleshooter does naturally. The difference is that KT is codified. So instead of cutting to the chase, you spend much of your time exploring dead ends that you knew were dead ends before you entered. Before long, you are begging the engineer sitting next to you to just shoot you :rifle: ...or calling in sick to avoid the day long wheel spinning meetings.
Papewaio,
Don't take my comments above as necessarily a criticism of the hats in particular. I just had flashbacks...
I used to do a lot of "Quality Management" style meetings. They actually worked pretty well although parts of it were a waste of time. As has been pointed out, a weakness is that with the ORG there is not a real mission (at least not in most forums or threads.)

Imagine, the Babe thread run with the six hats thinking!
•look - look at the babes, baby!
•use - use it the way you want! (...)
•make - make a better day with a thousand pics a day!
•reduce - reduce your time with the babe pics, otherwise it'll kill you.
•stimulate - ahem. ahem.
•create - create more pics (i.e. photograph them)
•go - go and hunt for the real babes!
•spot - spot on, lady.
•think - analyze the babe.
•view - what more can I say?
•make - make them your...ahem..."friend"
•see - see and admire their beauty.
•keep - keep their pics; keep them if you want.
•achieve - enjoy.
In other words, I don't need corporate standardization of "thinking." Gah! Thinking must be standardized! Guidelines are needed! The masses must be taught to think!
I don't think so. ~D

The use of this would be for funnily enough the watchtower, which if you were observant is not being used for constructive analysis but as a bitch fest. They are venting spleen and not actually trying to resolve anything and go forward.
This is a simple tool that is not just used in managerial roles, it is actually used by families and in schools as well. Its use has been noted as very useful for ESL students whose cultural background means that they are using different forms of analysis. As such I thought since this is a multinational venue it might be a useful tool for us to use in resolving issues that come up in the watchtower.
I© have been racking my Brain® about this, but I do not see any improvement whatsoever resulting from this. Besides, we are not a team and we are not trying to 'accomplish' something that would look good on a management®© chart

I am trying to have an Org that all of us enjoy going to. Pray tell what are you trying to accomplish?I do not play the games anymore, at least for now. My main aim in visiting the .org is to be informed about political and cultural developments and have fun with various people. To pay my dues, as it were, I hit on the idea to make a historical link sticky in the Monastery that serves both gamers and people such as me who are mainly interested in 'secondary' subjects. I believe this sort of quid pro quo makes for good interaction that goes beyond mere consumptive use of a forum. So I feel I do have a stake in this forum, but it is restricted to occasional use and serves no wider purpose.

Kind Adrian, do you mind adding this site, http://www.manybooks.net, to your directory listing? ~:)
It has a lot of free ebooks (currently over 11,000). I was browsing and I even saw a 7 volume series about the "Fall and Decline" of Rome.
IMO, the link should be highlighted at the very top since it covers many areas, not just history
I originally posted the link at the Backroom here:

;and as you can see, other members enjoyed it the same way I did. :balloon2:

Del Arroyo, much as I share some of your sentiments, this is the Watchtower and we put on our best hats here. Yours may be festive, but it seems inappropriate for the occasion.
