Back in the 70's AT&T (before Ma Bell was broken up into tiny pieces - which have become big pieces ... again, without anyone caring) and RCA (just before they went bankrupt to the Japanese) offered to set up a means for the government to look into the homes of criminals (or anyone - or everyone). Congress created a law against it. They thought it was an intrusion of privacy (something many republicans no longer see as being a protected part of being a citizen or protected under the constiution). They also left an open window for it - they made it a law in so much as it was not in favor of "freedom". [Meaning, if it was in favor of "freedom, by perception, it might be alright. Er? Say what? Again, democracy has always confused me - but, I certainly don't believe in benevolent Kings either).
Here it is; the other night on CBS it was reported that the FCC (under Reagan, and Clinton) had conceeded that it might be alright to do so - IF it was in and for the good of the nation. What that means, is unknown (to me); but, the gist of it is that since all air phones (those not having wires) can be listened to - all TV's linked by cable or satellite can be tapped as well.
So, are we being watched? By a paranoid govenment? Probably. The technology is here, the paranoia is there, the possibility to embarras any that oppose them is there - so why not?
Especially, since it was preapproved by former administrations? [I might add, word is Bush41, didn't ever like the idea - the last liberal minded socialistic caring president).
Thing is, it is possible. There is no longer a need for "receiver - sender, just an access". Curious, eh?
