Well, it's sundown here on the East Coast, and I beleive it starts off the day of Yom Kippur for our Jewish members (do we have any? I don't know). So to all that celebrate it, Happy Yom Kippur. ~

"Happy Yom Kippur"? Do you say "Happy Lent" too? ~

Why is this in the Backroom? And a "Happy Yom Kippur" is nonsense. I wish everyone a miserable and remorseful Yom Kippur. ~;p

Lemme reword that: have a yom kippur the way you want it!

Thanks.

Missing school is indeed fun.

Now back to oppressing palestinians!

How back to oppressing palestinians!

Efrem, glad you posted. Could you give us the meaning behind Yom Kippur? Thanks

If I wasn't exhausted, I would explain it in depth. Basically, it is the end of the Jewish period of atonement, similar to the end of Lent. A more experianced Jew (read better Jew) can explain it better.

My best wishes.

I agree; this doesn't belong to the backroom (unless some troll starts bashing Judaism).

I think its were you say sorry to everyone for all the bad things you did over the year and you promise god you'll be good in the future. And you throw breadcrumbs in water or something alone those lines.

And your supposed to fast.

This should stay in backroom cause it is likely to get nasty in a hurry.

Actually I see no reason why a topic like this shouldn't be in the Backroom, even if it doesn't turn nasty.
Even if it is hard to believe - getting nasty is not a prerequisite for Backroom threads.

Any better Jews around who can elaborate some more?

A Jewish partner at work popped in last night on his way home and we had a chat about Yom Kippur.

I must say I was, once again, impressed both with the degree to which even not very observant Jews observe the festivals of their faith/community, and also with the content of the festival itself. Put it like this, its not exactly like popping into church for an hour at christmas.

Yom Kippur is also interesting for the problems, ie pogroms, the Kol Nidre has caused. This is a prayer which means that Jewish people are forgiven for any promises they have made to God, and not kept, in that year but that was misunderstood in the middle ages as allowing them to break contracts with others (eg christians), and became a convenient excuse for anti-semitism.

Its all very interesting.

I am certainly not a "good" Jew in the sense that I no longer follow the religion. However, since I was Bar Mitzvahed, my family are all Jews and I have a huge honkin' nose, I might count.

Yom Kippur is the Jewish Day of Atonement. It's the most important holiday in the Jewish year and it involves repenting for the sins you have committed in the previous year. Imagine Catholic confession, without the confessing to the priest bit. Now extend the confession all day, include a fast and spend the whole time in temple. Just like most other Jewish holidays, it's about remembering how miserable our lives are.

I'm in a public school, but since a really good percantage of the school is Jewish we get Jewish holidays off. :balloon2:

What the? In Texas we're not allowed to have religious holidays. Christmas vacation is called "Winter Break". It doesn't apply for private schools here though. That's why I said that...

Not to mention the fact, we have like 5-10 jews in our entire high school...

When they piss me off I'm known to scream

"DIE KASE IST IN MEIN HOSE!" (excuse the spelling), and then laugh alot because I screamed "The cheese is in my pants" in a foreign language.
