i havent seen much movies this year...but I say war of the worlds
I found the War of the Worlds to be a good movie...'till the end. At the end I was very disappointed. I mean come on! Planning an invasion for fiftythousand0mg years and they can't think of (what was it again?) air or some bacteria?
Pff, fo' real. :(
Star Wars 3, was that this year? Wait, no. I'll have to go with "Napola"

yeah thas right...what i disliked more though was the happy ending...not of the world but of the family...c'mon that boy could never have made it back...but i ti is the best movie i've seen in 2005
War of the Worlds as best film of the year? You've gotta be kidding me. That was the worst Spielberg has ever done.
Potential nominees IMO. By no means a complete list:
Cinderella Man
Batman Begins
Sin City
A History of Violence
The Constant Gardner
Downfall
Crash
So far, for me it's Sin City.
There were a few good others, but this is the only one that really surprised me (even knowing the comics).

How was A History of Violence? Any good? Looks interesting to me.

yeah i want to see cinderellla man...it suposed to kick ass...just like Four Brothers....who saw that one
oooh and how was Charlie and The chocolate factory
Cinderella Man is very good but horribly cliched, especially with regard to its depiction of Max Baer, the reigning heavyweight champion of the time. Baer was nothing like the cold blooded, bullying braggart portrayed in the film. The movie's distortion of actual events and people is totally uncalled for and seriously taints the films longevity as an all time great boxing film. Shame really, because Braddock's true to life, astounding comeback is more than enough to compel the average idio... err, moviegoer to root for him. Goddamn Hollyweird!

Sin City or Batman Begins for me.
I haven't seen Downfall yet, but I'd really like to.

sin city was very well done on many levels, but it lacks any meaningful depth (imo). proof was very good, i'd probably say that was the best of the year.. not a great year for cinema, imo. i want to see capote and good night, and good luck, both are supposed to be very good. i want to see serenity too, because i liked the tv show (firefly).
i thought crash was very good and war of the worlds was okay although i found it a tad long

That's the way it was in the original 1953 War of the Worlds (including the book)
The Martians had no resistance to the bacteria in our atmosphere to which we have long since become immune. Once they had breathed our air, germs, which no longer affect us, began to kill them. The end came swiftly. All over the world, their machines began to stop and fall. After all that men could do had failed, the Martians were destroyed and humanity was saved by the littlest things which God and His wisdom had put upon this Earth.

This is one of the same reasons I hated the end of “signs”. Water is deadly to them why attack a planet covered with water. The stupid aliens from WOW’s could have analyzed what’s in our atmosphere before invading to find out if they should breath our air. DUH!
i´d say Sin City overall and I had Serenity as the best sci-fi movie i´ve seen in years...blows the new star wars movies clear out of the water...
I can only really mention those 2....really it´s hasn´t been such a great year....

Favorite that I have seen, hands down is Batman Begins.
But then, I have seen: Bewitched (a chick made me go), Sin City, Madagascar, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Kingdom of Heaven, Star Wars Episode III.. and that is all I can remember.
I would like to see History of violence, Lord of War, Corpse Bride...
But I liked Batman Begins more than any other comic book movie I have ever seen.

2046 was my favorite this year. I am a pretty eclectic guy though when it comes to film , so when I hear Batman and Σταρ ουαρς , I cringe. Sorry to sound snobbish.

Of the movies I saw this year -- Hitch (2005) or Musa (2001)
Nice runner-up is Het Schnitzelparadijs (2005) a Dutch movie ~D
its kinda hard, but I would say "I heart Huckabees", "Kingdom of Heaven" or "Crash".

As already said, what could they do with the movie?
Should they have gone the way of Independence Day and used a computer virus (that was so obviously ripped from War of the Worlds)? That wouldn't work either as it would have been even more fishy.
While I don't think WoW was the best it was good enough. At times you did feel as if the director didn't know which stool to sit on and sat himself between it. Would it be a personal story or an action movie? In te end it becmae neither. You got a glimpse into Tom's character, but just as he was about to reveal more it became crash bang boom and oneliners, which was instantly interrupted by a repeat of the character development... The theory of the movie was great, but was flawed in its execution. I hope this will be tried again soon as it honestly was good.
The best movie... Well, I haven't seen any truly great ones this year. To say that Star War III is the best says a whole lot.
Yes it is great but come on... Lots of movies are better. I would say that in a normal year SW3 would perhaps be top 5 but not the winner, ever (well this year certainly crushes that huh).

I don't know really. If I were to count Alexander (last November) then I'd say that, but I can't say aside from that.
The Wizard
10-15-2005, 02:34
Ugh, that movie sucked. Seriously. Trying to fit everything of Alexander's life into a single flick gives you an ill-paced, wrongly fitted together, badly plotted piece of cinema history.~:handball:

I think you have a very good point.
I think, it would have been better to make a series of movies. That in my opinion would have been awsome.
BUT, I do think, if there was a go at a one movie life story, this would be the best bet. I thought the battle scenes were very nice, and it was astonishingly historically accurate. One of the only flaws: The mutiny happened before Hydaspes in the movie, instead of afterwards.

This is not as hard as it looks, and I'll not choose old Hollywood this time. I say "Twilight Samurai", and a special mention to "Iluminados por el Fuego" ("Iluminated by Fire"). The first of Japan, the second from here.

Was Kingdom of Heaven any good. I'm considering buying the DVD. I have a feeling it's going to be super PC.

The problem with that is that the alien who was on the roof would have run himself into disintegration by charging through the corn field in the middle of the night. The dew would have destroyed him.
I enjoyed the new Batman and Sin City. Did Ong-Bak come out this year or last? I don't remember...

i couldnt say it better
It seems that War of the Worlds totally lost the "futility of man" aspect of the book. The death of the aliens by bacteria was the whole point of the story. The new film was a little too action based for my liking, but it also had the struggle to survive elements which reflected the book. The 50's film was, of course, much more faithful to the book than this one. The book was published in 1898 by the way for those who are ignorant of it's existence and I think the original late-Victorian setting would have been great for the new film. It would have made it less like Independence Day Mark 2. Plus Tom Cruise annoys me.
BTW Twilight Samurai is a great film, but it was released in 2004 so probably doesn't count for this years list.

So pretty much the best part of the movie was in the trailers and they just added fluff around it. Too bad...

I'd have to say Star Wars. It shouldn't be the best one, but I haven't seen any movies this year, really. All of them look horrible, and the ones I did see (Kingdom of Heaven, War of the Worlds), were not as good as Star Wars.
yeah when it waslate 18e century it would have been better
Err... that would be 19th century, but glad you agree with the sentiment!

Isn;t it early to judge? The King Knong remake will be released in December won't it?
That said, I have only seen Batman Begins and Corpse Bride. Which was better? Hmmm, I guess Batman could have been great if I supported the death penalty(imo great movies challenge preconceived notions). But I loved Corpse Bride's dark humor, and is a lot easier to remember since I saw it only on Friday. So I say Corpse Bride....
Brilliant movies I have seen this year:
The Red Violin (1999)
Sin City (2005)
The Edukators (2003)
Downfall (2004)

Sin City and Batman Begins were the only movies I really enjoyed in the cinema this year, but there seem to be a couple coming up that might still beat it. Corpse Bride, Serenity, A History of Violence, and King Kong spring to mind.

Batman begins was a joy throughout. Sin city was ok but the middle bored me to death. The descent and Devils rejects were great horror/gore films i watched and enjoyed greatly. Cinderalla Man was a great film as well, touching and entertaining. Episode three was good as well, simply for the great fights at the end.
The two i'm looking forward too coming out soon are King Kong and The exorcism of Emily Rose which , especially the former, look top draw.
The worse film i have seen was Wolf Creek which was just total crap. One of the best new horrors my arse!
I just checked, and Ong-Bak was released in 2004, but it came out on DVD this year...I'll change my answer to that.
I was so happy to see such a well-done revival of the Kung Fu genre, picking up where Jackie Chan left me hanging. Even though it breaks convention throughout the movie (the replays, for example), that can easily be credited as a technique unique to the director or the film itself. I was able to look past these drawbacks.
The themes and motifs in the film were also quite powerful and more or less pertinent to everyone who'd see it. I imagine a few of the jokes lose something in translation (Humlae apparently means "dirty balls"), but no more than any other martial arts movie I've ever seen. Ong-Bak was the best movie of the year.
