If hard drive space is not a problem, I suggest copying the entire MTW directory and pasting it into C:\Program File\Total War and renaming it so you can tell it apart from the original. Create a desktop shortcut to the exe and give that a similar name. I'm assuming that your existing install is with the Viking expansion and any patches.

Run Gnome, click Load file and browse to your newly created 'clone' directory. The only files which Gnome is able to load and edit are the Unit_Prod and Building_Prod files, plus the missile stats file.

Backup these files to a directory where the game will be unable to load them by accident and edit away to your heart's content.

Some changes still need to be made using notepad, or similar, first (word wrap off). For example, adding a new unit is best done by copying the line for an existing unit, pasting it at the bottom end of the list (thus preserving the tab characters which define the data columns) and changing the unit name before saving the file. THEN load it into Gnome for editing the unit stats and so forth. Gnome does not able you to enter new lines of data, only edit existing ones.
