View Full Version : Movie clip format
Whats a good format for the opening/ending movies that will work with all computers? What CODEC should I use to render? I have an ATI Radeon DV8700 or something and I've got like a whole lot of clips and pics... got a pretty cool intro sequence in mind... "Now is the winter of discontent..."
Also how do you change the images for the events (plague, assasination, province lost, etc.) I want to switch them with Froisart style medieval illuminations. Oh and the spies are now female and vavavoom!! Really interesting juxtaposing pretty women with heraldic banners. Don't worry, nothing too revealing or vulgar. I just thought that they're spies produced by a brothel, its weird that they should be all guys.

regards the movies and encoding try searching for a media encoding site in google or similar,
editing movies is certainly not one of my hobbies,
i used to do a bit of mpeg editing, but truth be told i no longer have the tools, and my interest waned.

personaly i like mpeg much better... ( real video ) and they have a program for $100-150 that is exellent in doing this.... cant remember name off hand but u can find it at real's homesite ( search in browser )
however... if you have adobe premiere they have codacs available for mpeg as well... this is what i use..and it is top of the line for personal users...
avi is also another widly accepted format... and almost every video editor out there will save to this now.. including flash 5 and some of the lesser versions such as swish or swift.
check out the videos on our clan website fearfulways.com , these were made in flash... if you want a movie much larger than this you should go for avi or mpeg..
swish 2.0 costs $50 and is probably one the the best software purchases ive ever made www.swishzone.com (http://www.swishzone.com) i have tons video programs but i use this one more than any of them...its simple and very powerful.
hope this helps http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

hmmm, i've tried the Swish demo and get very inconsistent results with it, capefear. whereas i can see what it's supposed to do, it doesnt seem to do want to do it. the main image doesnt update when clicking on the single scene images, and i cant seem to insert single images and then put them together all as a movie and have it run. when i loaded in an already made animation, swish added a mask to it which then removed my background image and skewed things up. i wasnt impressed.
i could tell what they were trying to do and on the surface, it seemed like it shld be pretty intuitive and easy to use, but in actual practice, it didnt seem to want to do these things. i'll be trying macromedia flash next.

the swish demo is designed so that you cant save your work.... this could possibly be the reason for the update problem but ive never seen it. also, eariler versions such as 1.0 or 1.5 were not that good... only 2.0 is truly worth having....
inseting objects is by far one of the main reasons i like swish... goto the insert menu at the top and you will see options for video, image, and sound inserts. as far as the masking.... you can import clips with or without a mask by checking or unchecking the box that pops up when you import it. the only thing swish wont do that flash will is form control... flash also has a few other time saving features but the price is very high and you need to be an expert flash designer to even make some text appear lol... swish is truly a perfect program for the casual web designer. btw... all the movies on the fearsite were made with swish... if you visited our old site awhile back when we had a broadband side to our site you might remember a movie there... this was made in flash.... the difference being the old movie was around 2 meg... swish doesnt handle large files at all...but for smaller stuff its really great!
I got premiere but I'm worried that if I render it with a certain codec it will work for me but not for other computers. I want to make a neat intro movie for my War of the Roses mod http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
