good question and one i am having trouble with. if you know what you want to alter you can always use the find function. ie say u want to change ammo - hit edit then find type in ammo and the programme will find the first entry for ammo. of course u will not know if this entry will apply to the unit ui want so u may have to scroll to the left to see the unit involved and then back again to change the entry. i hope there is a simpler way but this is how i did it (tho ultimately unsuccessfully as u can see from my threade below on game going weird)

Yep i use the find function also but it would be nice to see the file in columns that you can edit

OK one method you can use which is also
useful for creating new units.
Divide the units into catagories
spear
sword
bow
cavbow
cavlance
cavsword
and so on
make as many copies of prod11
as catagories name them so
remove any and all units
that dont fit catagory
tab a space between each line
and you'll have a much easier format to
deal with.Edit the line in that prod
and then copy in to main prod.
It's a bit of work to do it
but if you plan on doing this alot
you will need to devise some
system like this.
This may not be the best system in the world
but it works.
I work on a logic that the less you
see in one go the less daunting it
seems.
Hope this helps or at least spark some ideas.

swoosh,
the devs made that file so it can be read in Excel. it's a tab delimted file, which basically means they stuck a tab control in at the end of each field. you can open the entire file in Excel and it uses these tabs to space everything out in the right columns and rows and so on and is much easier to read than in wordpad.
you have to be careful of the tab delimiting if using in something besides excel, however. i think a number of text editors DONT show these tabs. they are hidden and embedded and you have to be careful about not overwriting the tab controls or you can screw up the fields.
it ...should... also be possible to re-arrange the entire thing in excel to make it more readable; you just have to be careful about these tabs and making sure you load and save the file as a tab delimited file.

Where can obtain the unit crudaser excel file
by Yas?

In the Faqs&Docs section of Org the excel spreadsheets are posted by Target they r named "Production Excel Files". If u have excel(2k or xp) they make editing very easy, the cost/unit data formulas and everything is included.

Shoosh,
It IS an Excel file. I can edit and save it (the original that is, provided by Target and downloadable at this site) using Excel '97 if I'm making a few changes then save it as tab delimited and overwrite the txt version.
For some simple temporary/testing changes I just use find/replace in the txt version in the root directory (experienced far too much pain editing the txt version by hand!).

Using Office XP, I can wiev the file with Excel, but if I save it (as TAB-delimited), even having made no changes, the game crashes on startup with the message "Uknown unit at column 2 row 126" or something very much like that. Its always the same row and column, regardless of what changes I have (or haven't!) done.

Ok guys I know you can change it in exel
bla bla and do this with pearl adn do that
with this and so on.
I should have made it clear which I did not.
Everybody that has a version of
Windows that will run this game has
wordpad no?
Not every body has compatable copy of exel.
I may be strange but I can not see the
difference to a bunch of numbers
in exel and wordpad if you use Keyboard
comands to navigate. As welly said It's
an exel file anyway.tab tab and tab
some more.
Now I use both becaue It does not bother me any more as all my prodfile .xls .txt
are all brokendown in the same format
I promise to edit a doc with six entries
is easier then 200.In exel in word in dos
in German. Now if it had a macro like prod 13
that would be another story but it doesn't

Its difficult because you cant tell which stats are linked to the field.
