Why?
How can stop it doing it?

I understand it is to camouflage their own smell. Consistent punishment seems to be the best way of avoiding it.
That said, our current dog will do it all the same if we are not paying attention. I think he does it to annoy us. Off course, afterwards he will get a shower, which he hates, but by then he has probably forgotten his disobedience, so it doesn't help in preventing it.

I was walking my mum's boyfriend's dog. I turned my back for a second and she (she is a Welsh border collie) was rolling around, I thought "oh she rolling around" and continued waking. Then she started it again and I noticed that she was covered in poo, it looked fresh as well.

hm my dog has never done that before, so I take it my dog's the exeption ?
Or maybe it's just because he's really stupid, or he misses those particular genes...~;)

My dogs don't roll around in other dog's poo, only that of other animals like horses and cows. They also enjoy rolling inn anything that is dead, a few examples are deer, skunk, and fish. It is next to impossible to stop them from doing this, although if you are around yelling at them can get them to stop for a while.

A somewhat unrelated question: If cats don't like going in the water, why do they like fish so much? Even when they do swim, they have no fish-catching skills. Something about the smell, perhaps?

Not a clue. I think our cats like birds a whole lot more. Rewing Blackbirds, Chickadees, Blue Jays, Robins, you name it they'll catch it. Well besides the Hawks constantly circling our house....

The things my cats have caught (and eaten) over the last 5 years (since they were born):
Rats
Voles
Mice
A squirrel's tail
Fish (out of the fishbowl)
Rabbits
Birds, lots of birds
Pheasants
I'm sure there's more, but that's what comes to memory.

I edited my post, that should clear it up a bit, but you really should read the entire thread before commenting.

I am suprised noone came up with this:
Dogs like to roll around in crap and rotten material because they like the smell. (My dog eats that stuff, too. It's disgusting.) It is not simply a matter of covering up their own smell, though that is certainly a factor. The smell of tobacco would be good at covering up a dog's scent; however, they do not enjoy this because the smell is so offensive to them (it is very sharp.) That is why dogs do not like to roll around in tobacco ashes.

Yep. It's like a fine perfum; The better it is, thee more they dislike being washed. If they find some horse *Self edit* to roll around in, they can't stand being washed. *Self edit* from other dogs isn't as hard to find and is thus not as valuable. it's very annoying when you have two dogs because even if one dosen't tend to eat poo, it starts to stink to because they spend all day chewing on each other(They're both about 1 year old)
Speaking of horse *Self Edit*, How bad is it when they eat the dropings? I'm fairly sure that horse dropings are not that bad, but you still have to wonder~

Dogs roll in poo. Dogs eat poo.
But forgive them that, because they have a character. And a character goes a long way. ~;p

Cats have more character than dogs, in my opinion. But that's another story..
Dogs have stupid characters.
Aside from that, we have two Jack Russell dogs and I've never seen them roll in, nor eat each other's poo (which is pretty much the only poo they ever see, since our backyard is large enough for two small dogs to run around without us needing to 'walk' them). They do eat all sorts of other stuff, though, including wood and plastic things. And they're a living testament to the fact that dogs are stupid, like I said before.
Not like cats. I've never seen our cat eat poo either, but what's more: I've never even seen him excrete his own poo. Which is not quite the case with the dogs.
Regardless of why they do it, dog poo is one of the main worm transmission vectors. If a dog with worms takes a dump, and your dog rolls in it/eats it, your dog has a very good chance of getting the worms. IIRC, this applies to roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. Heartworms are passed by mosquitos, while tapeworms are "caught" by eating a flea that has ingested a tapeworm larvae (which comes out with the dog crap).
For these reasons, it is important to pick up after your dogs, and keep them away from other dog feces.

Make sure they know it's not right. Make a deep inpression in them.
Good luck:bow:

It rather differs between dogs. My families last two dogs were not very bright. But the one before that was very intelligent. He knew exactly when he could get away with breaking a rule and he even had a sense of humour (sort of). When in the park, he liked to sneak up on you and press a wet nose or tongue in your neck or knee. He really seemed to enjoy your suprise.
But I agree cats are more intelligent. They are also less loyal and less socioable, which is why I prefer dogs.

A cat will watch with silent joy while you and yours are attacked and eaten by things that go bump in the night. A dog will charge with the fury and courage of a Sherman tank against overwhelming odds and give his life for his friends.
Cats are inglorious rats with demon eyes, vacant souls, and nothing in their hearts but horrid fecundity.
Dogs are, wait for it...

Dogs are friends and part of the family. Cats just want food, and otherwise go about their business..
Our dog is one of the kindest beings around, (she has even adopted bady mice at times..~;) at least I think she adopted them, happened some years ago, she is ten years old now) and unless our two cats try to take her food she does not even growl at them. The cats on the other hand, and one of them in particular, can come to her and begin stroking themselves against her before they suddely turn on her with claws out and try to hit her..
No, give me a dog over a cat anyday..
Dogs also just want food. And I very much doubt wether our dogs at least will give their lives for anything at all. Dogs are 'man's best friend' because man can make them do all kinds of tricks, whereas cats won't so easily debase themselves. Also, cats are prettier. As evidenced:

hmm opinions may differ of course , but IMO you can count on dogs to save your life whereas a cat won't ( or just can't ) help in any way.
I would have definately counted on my dog - rest in peace  - to help me out , when in trouble- and not only because we fed him ;)
And as you might know by now, I prefer dogs over cats, and thus find dogs prettier ~;) and better , in every way.
