Police and community leaders in Birmingham have appealed for calm after a man was stabbed to death in disturbances in the Lozells area.
Three other people were stabbed, and a police officer was hit in the leg with a ball bearing fired from a gun.
The violence on Saturday is thought to have involved rival groups of youths.
It was reportedly linked to tensions in the past week over the alleged sexual assault of a 14-year-old-girl although no offence has been reported.
Extra police are on duty in the area and there is damage on a number of streets.
Nice place Birmingham :hide:

The violence has been going on for months in this latest spate , and for several years previously .
Just a bigger outbreak this time , so bigger headlines .
Plea for calm after city clashes
Isn't it ironic that the stabbing victim was reportedly appealing for calm when he was killed .

Im not quite sure what part of Brum 'Lozell' is !
I have a lot of friends in Brum and the place is becoming ugly and very unfriendly.
This is a worrying trend.

i see the media were most reluctant to report the racial element of this, (the gangs were asian and black and were fighting each other) or even to call a riot a riot.
Quite a good piece in the Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/race/story/0,11374,1599126,00.html
IMHO there would be a bit less of this if the Commission for Racial Equality devoted a small amout of its time to the racism within and between our ethnic minorities rather than treating racisim as a whites only issue.
Looks like someone else was shot and died...

Really ? All the coverage I saw/read mentioned it , often in the headline or first paragraph , must be some strange media you are viewing .~;)
the gangs were asian and black and were fighting each other
And also asian against asian and black against black , look at news from the past 5 years from Lozells and surrounding areas (or even further bach if you wish). Gang warfare where what road/estate you live on is just as "important" as your ethnicty , where you drink , where you eat or what clubs you go to .

Not as ugly and as unfriendly as where you're coming from matey.

Saying somewhere isnt as bad as Newport isnt really saying much ~:)
But then again, hasn't been a fatal stabbing here for a while.

I've been to many other cities and there are far, far worse. Birmingham is a pretty nice place to live. I'm not going to list the places I think are worse because unlike you I'm not going to come out with silly sweeping statements and piss people off.
This is nowhere near where I live, so I can't say I really care. Certain areas like that have always been a haven for crime and strife. And by 'certain areas like that' I don't mean those dominated by blacks and Asians, its pure coincidence if they end up inhabiting them.
Loz had always been abit of hole imo but you get shitty places everywhere. The midlands has coventry which i'm sure other midlanders agree is as dire as it gets ( anyone from there i'm sorry but i can't help myself)

Someone please tell me theres a pink elephant there, or have I got the heebie jeebies from Friday?
I thought Brum had been a bit of a trouble spot for years due to the big mix of ethnicities (is that a word?) and cultures?

There is basically a huge melting pot of races here and all we get is people settling in areas and become hostile to everyone else, please see areas such as Alum rock where they have nice signs on bus stops saying no whites after nine o'clock which makes you feel great if your waiting for a bus at 8.55 on a friday night~
There are alot of predominant white and black areas of that type such as Handsworth wood and good parts of kingstanding who are openly hostile to other races but thats just the way it is. I can't see it changing to be honest.
Please stop refering to us as northerners, we are midlanders for christ sake~D

Well, I had radio 4 on on Sunday morning and after listening for an hour I had managed to piece together that some sort of disturbance had happened and that was it. there was no mention of "The black community think that a black girl was raped by Pakistani men and gangs of black and asian youths were kicking the bejesus out of each other."
And also asian against asian and black against black , look at news from the past 5 years from Lozells and surrounding areas (or even further bach if you wish). Gang warfare where what road/estate you live on is just as "important" as your ethnicty , where you drink , where you eat or what clubs you go to
That this may ALSO happen does not detract from the fact that saturday's riot was on racial grounds.
Oh, and on the great Brum debate, Brum is all right, IMHO. Silly accent though.

You are spot on there mate. Some of the worse racism does come hatred between some of the ethinic minorities. Many west indian areas have had fights and lasting feuds with west african immigrants in birmingham and an issue on being the same colour goes right out of the window as gang clashes have happened quite alot in the past.
Not to long back a young white lad in birmingham was near beaten to death by a group of asian youths for simply wearing an England shirt. Now, near nothing was mentioned of this and the incident was basically swept under the carpet. As far as i'm concerned it was a racial attack but it was deemed as a gang assault. I wonder if the lad had been asian and was wearing another football team shirt and the gang had been white, the situtation would have been swept away as easily.

Its just looked down on by Brummies, according to my Brummie ex-trainee.
Mind you he was a bit geographically challenged. He'd been looking at my Gillingham Football Club mug for about two months, not to mention talking to me every day (often enough about the exploits of the Gills), before he asked "err, so whereabouts in the north IS Gillingham?"
(i do not have anything remotely like a Northern accent)
I told him that Gillingham is in Kent, and asked what on earth made him think I was from up north. "Oh" he said, "Gillingham sounds like the name of a northern town, like, you know, Rotherham."
"Really", I said. "Or like Birmingham, maybe?"
Silence descended.

Info
The year 985AD, saw the foundation of Wolverhampton. It was in that year that the Anglo Saxon King Aethelred made a grant of land at Heantune (Wolverhampton) to the town's benefactoress Lady Wulfruna. It is generally thought that the Lady Wulfruna was the sister of the old King, Edgar, who had died in 976.
The king's grant covered an area of land bounded by Bilsatena (Bilston), Seeges League (Sedgley) and Tresel (Trysull).
Nine years after the original grant the Lady Wulfruna endorsed a minster church which stood on the present site of St. Peter's Church.
Wolverhampton had always been part of Staffordshire until it was stolen in 1974 to form the west midlands. That was a sad day in my life.

Tell you what shades mate on behalf of the west midlands i'll sell it back for a fiver to you, what do say dude?~D
Seriously mate i didn't know that. It weird man, the yam yams don't sound like people from staffordshire, say from Stoke. The people from there really sound northern, abit manchy/scouse formed together.
It weird that brummie accent people always hear is usually a black country accent and not a birmingham one.
