View Full Version : No more captured Eagles in BI?

I finally fought and destroyed a First Cohort for the first time ever in RTW while playing as the Franks. I wiped out every single person in that army just to make sure that eagle would be well and truly captured... yet it wasn't.

Why is this only a vanilla campaign feature?

At this point in history, captured eagles were collected like stamps by the barbarians.

from my experience, you can still capture eagles in BI. one of my generals became "Timo of the Eagles" and earned the Eagle Collector virtue because he won three or four.
I am not sure why destroying the first cohort didn't give you an eagle......ideas, anyone?

All my captured eagles have occured in auto-calc'd battles. Haven't captured one yet in a fought battle. So don't know why you aren't capturing the eagle if you destroyed everything.

I've never had this happen pre-BI and post-BI, though I have fought and destroyed a lot of them in both...

I captured about 3 eagles with my Berber recruited general, who became man of the hour and l8er Faction leader. I have never had it happen pre-Bi ( I only played RTW fully 2 weeks before BI so i only ever played as the Romans [ i had already unlocked everyone but thought they would be a nice starting unit])

I guess there's a less than 100% chance of capturing one, even if you kill every last man. At least they're far more common in BI now.

Well, the trait-file doesn't provide us with any good evidence for anything. The triat comes at 100% when CapturedLegionaryEagle... So what is CapturedLegionaryEagle? I don't know and the trait-file provides no info on it.

I ran across something similar in my H/H Huns campaign.

The first time I captured an Eagle, I didn't notice at the time; the news tile or some such informed me of what I had done. I paid attention to it after that.

The second time I faced an Eagle cohort unit, I made an effort to kill every man in that unit to get the Eagle. But, no Eagle.

The third time (gotta love those ambushes in northern Italy on the BI map....~D ) I did the same thing, killed every man in the unit, and got the expected notification & trait increase.

Maybe, *maybe* I didn't actually kill every man that 2nd time. But I'm pretty sure I watched the Eagle go down. I have no idea why it would register one time and not others.

I guess there's a less than 100% chance of capturing oneNope, you have a 100% chance of gaining 1 point in the CapturedEagle trait.

I've only fought one First Cohort in BI but didnot gain the trait and their were no infantry survivors from that battle.

I`ve captured dozens of Eagles, but got notification & trait only for 3 of them. A bug probably.

I agree with Viking, because after destorying a number of Eagles I only got an eagle taker trait for one of my general last night.

But one think to take note is that, that general is a warlord that i build from my city so i was thinking whether or not they are the only ones that can get the trait?

Maybe some of the dead Legionaries "healed", thus not eliminating the unit.

I have never captured an eagle in RTW, I always knock the Romans out before they get them.

Kraxis

The loser doesn't 'heal'. Thus that can't have happened.

I've only captured Eagles in BI and when I got the acknowledgement it said that the eagle was taken to a nearby city I owned and the Romans would make great efforts to get it back.

Recently I took down 3 1st Cohorts in one battle but nothing was said (I couldn't believe it). This time I wasn't near any city I owned so could this be a factor? Does there need to be a place for the eagle to go? Has anyone else noticed this or is it just an odd coincidence?

I've had the eagle capture message in BI a couple of times playing as ERE, but not had any eagle related traits.

One thing - if you are are currently in a horde, you do not have a city to return the captured eagle to - could this be why some folks aren't seeing this after wiping out cohorts?

TinCow

I was not in horde. I captured the eagle as the Franks when the WRE sallied from a siege. The eagle was not in the sallying army, but in a reinforcing army that came from outside. Actually, I think the sallying army was the supporting one.

I am 96% certain of that the one of my generals that managed to capture all 3 eagles was a family member either married or born into my family.

The first eagle that I got notification of, I took while I was in enemy territory(ERE territory). The two others I took during enemy siege attacks I think.

Here`s my general, btw:

wow.. how did you get that many stars with so many loyalties?

Viking

Good question actually. According to his traits and retinues he should only have have 2 loyalty points, so he must be loyal by personality.

If you're besieging a city that has a first cohort in it and you hit the auto-combat button, your general doesn't get credit for capturing the eagle, even though there's nowhere for the 1st cohort to retreat to. Maybe they have time to see you coming and melt the eagle down or something.

My Frankish general captured 4 eagles, gaining the attribute "Eagle Collector" and getting the title "...of the Eagles."

Another thought: in all my battles where my general got credit for capturing an eagle, the general's bodyguard was heavily engaged in the action. Perhaps your general needs to take a more active role in the combat for it to count as a capture.
