This has probably been dealt with before but I couldn't find anything on it.

Having sapped a breach in the enemy's city wall and secured the missile towers either side with infantry I ordered my Hunnic cavalry through the breach. They stopped just short of it at every attempt and refused to enter the city until I captured a gate, whereupon they flooded through, no problem.
I don't remember having this trouble with RTW.

You can't order units to stand in the breach spot. They either have to go in or stay just outside. Also, you may need to turn off skirmish mode for missile units.

I had a problem in a battle last night where my general refused to chase routers. He would charge until his men were in the middle of the routers, then the double-arrow icon would disappear and he would stop. Clicking on them to charge again would result in about half a second of movement, then back to no-orders stance. They charged fine when the enemy was far away, but as soon as they got into the middle of broken units, this happened. Hasn't happened in any other battles before or since, but it made that one a right royal pain.

When something like that happens you should try ''aiming'' right in front of the routing units, your generals will then still kill the routers.
Still, the problem is a strange one, never happened in one of my games.

something occurred to me just now...

a unit can get stuck when going through an enemy unit, I have that sometimes when sending out the cavalry from behind my lines, they sometimes get stuck in the melee.

Yes, I have experienced units (infantry and cavalry) being stuck in combat even when enemies are around. There's usually one spot where they seem to think there's a phantom enemy; you can tell by the combat animations being done around that spot.

Have done a few sieges since and have had no problems, it was just the one time. It wasn't just HA that refused at the breach, tribal and heavy cavalry did as well.

Tincow seems to have a point.

Cavalry also refuses to go on bridges.

For me, sometimes they refuse to go through a gate if grouped. When I ungroup them they storm in.

I had the same problem once with cavalry attacking and stopping straight away. It turned out they would attack, kill 1 guy in the enemy unit and then say "orders completed", then I would have to attack again, they would kill 1 guy in the unit and say "orders completed" over and over. Took a while to kill a routing warband! Only happened to me once thank god.

As for the units stick in the middle of nowhere fighting ghosts, if you look at the spot the weirdo is fighting at you will see that you can still get the status of the unit that you originally defeated and killed on that spot. For example "Spear Warband (0 men); exhausted" or whatever.

I also cannot get cavalry to go across bridges ever since swimming was introduced. If I send them across to the other side, they always swim. Even if there are no units on the bridge and I guide them manually to the start of the bridge and point them at it. Needless to say, the routers are getting away!!

Cavalry go through the gate if grouped, I have used my cavalry battering rams many times to crash through enemy formations contesting breaches. What happens is the cavalry group halts in front of the gate quite a while, in line, in column, whatever, then one unit by one unit they will pass through the gate. However, second unit comes so close on the heels of the first that you end up with a traffic jam anyway. >.<. I wish I knew what number in what textfile to change so that the cavalry would wait longer before passing through so the group retains unit coherence.
