Christopher Hitchens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Hitchens) and George Galloway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Galloway) debated each other in New York at Baruch College on 14 September 2005. Both are extremely polarizing figures, and absolutely mesmerizing with their rhetorical skill.

This mp3 file is 25 Mb large and the debate is (warning) about 3 hours in length.

This was truly one of the most riveting things I've ever heard, and I'm sorry it took me so long to post it.

If Hitchen's "debating" style is anything like Galloway's, I think Ill pass. I couldnt sit through all the grandstanding. It'd be about as unsatisfying as listening to Moore go up against O'Reilly. ~;)

It was a good debate and I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it more so for the hint of reasonability still seemingly there in Hitchens than the bombast statements made by Galloway - even though they were often true and very funny.

Hitchens has undoubtedly changed from the great man he used to be, but he still holds some values like secular socialism strongly it seems, shame he can't get them out more often. He got most pee'd off in the whole debate when Galloway stated he was an apologist for Bush and that is where the path he is on leads. He stated many times that he still strongly supports the secular communist movement in Iraq, and even though he is clearly misguided in some of what he says, this shows him in better light than I ever thought I would hold him in again.

I just hope he gets around to reading Chomsky's latest book, it is amazing.

You don't know what you're missing mate. I listened to the first bit of this a while ago, and Hitchens actually uses facts and other exotic arguments. And besides, JAG doesn't like him, so he can't be too bad.

And speaking of Galloway, it looks like he may be going to prison.

I heard Galloway handed Hitchens' arse to him on a platter.

First I've heard of it. Where did you hear this?

Really , I thought he was going to Washington to refute these "lies" , should be interesting .~D ~D ~D
It seems he is standing by his testimony , I hope it is as entertaining as last time .

edit to addFirst I've heard of it. Where did you hear this?
It looks like it will depend on legal interpretations of "my behalf" , "I personally" and "benefited" , its in this mornings news .

Here's why he might be visiting jail soon.

I see Gorgeous says:

"The specific allegation against me is that I lied under oath in front of a senate committee.

That's a suggestively precise way to put it. I'd be willing to give quite good odds if you look through the transcript of what Georgeous said to that committee, and compare it to whatever evidence it is they say they now have, you will find he didn't ACTUALLY lie to them.

Georgeous is pretty sharp IMHO.

Oh yes, that he is. Much as I dislike the man, for all his bluster and outspoken views he's almost always exceedingly careful in how he phrases his words.

Gorgeous George is a mighty orator, of whom the likes have not been seen within a decade...

And speaking of Galloway, it looks like he may be going to prison.

But did the tabloid newspaper also not have similar "proof" of his wrong-doing?

It's the US Congress that has the proof.

As I pointed out here at the time of his testimony , he did lie under oath , it is absolutely impossible that he has never seen an oil barrel .~;)

Still it should be fun to watch if they do charge him .

Too bad congressional committees lack power to launch criminal investigations. Their findings are particularly irrelevant when dealing with foreign nationals like Mr. Galloway, anyway.

He could be guilty, I really don't know, but the story hasn't changed since it first broke a few months ago and it sounds like the same rehashed accusations that went nowhere back then. However nothing will come of it as the Senate wont allow Galloway to come to defend himself

Odd, I'd heard that the comittee was turning its evidence over to prosecutors.

Well, I saw it on TV news- but here's the result of a quick Google search:

The 65-page report by the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations accuses Galloway of perjury and obstruction of congressional proceedings. The evidence will be handed over to the Department of Justice for possible criminal charges.link (http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/10/24/galloway.accused/)

Galloway's political campaign, the Mariam Appeal, received at least $446,000.
Isn't that a charity for sick children . ~
CNN has been unable to reach Galloway for a response.
Probably because he has been busy on TV and radio all day doing interviews .

It looks like it will depend on legal interpretations of "my behalf" , "I personally" and "benefited"
