OK, I see every melee unit is armed with either SWORD, SPEAR or AXE.

What's the game effect of each weapon?

Yogi,

The SWORD has a stabbing/slashing effect, the SPEAR a thrusting effect and the AXE a chopping effect.

But I'm sure that does'nt answer your question, which is ....?????

the main game effect of teh different weapons are what they can be used against
the axe is armour peircing & works well against all infantry types but especially against armoured ones the axe does not work well against cavalry whereas the halberd works well against armoured infantry & is very effective against cav. There are 2 different kinds of sword in MTW the short sword used by units such as the MAA & the long sword(bastard or hand & a half) used by gallowglasses & gothic foot knights these last swords are used with 2 hands so they can be very deadly & becuase of teh 2 handed use they have armour piercing capability. Halberds & Pike represent the biggest advance in military hand held weapons(excluding gunpowder) of teh time as tehy work well against a wide variety of opponents

btw the long swords so actually work very well against cavalry even though they don't get any cav bonus but if use your imagination you can imagine a strong soldier with a long sword been able to cleave the legs off the horse http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

I know what the weapons are and do.

I was asking about GAME effects, ie, if a take a unit and change nothing but the weapon, what will happen?

There is a unit armed with CLUB also (Fanatics) but there are no HALBERD, PIKE or TWO_HANDED_SWORD. Just SWORD, SPEAR, CLUB and AXE.

So far I understand that AXE gives the unit a bonus against armoured troops but a penalty against cavalry.

How about CLUB, SPEAR and SWORD?

Yogi,

Download the original production crusaders_unit_prod11 Excel file (provided by Target and downloadable at The Org). If you dont have Excel, you can also download the Excel reader as well.

Open the Excel file, and tab to worksheet 'Tables'. The 1st table, entitled "Weapons Factors" provides the data your looking for.
