Gday

After looking through all the threads here I'm still at a loss to whether it is worth installing the 1.3 patch. How bad is the memory leak? Ther impression I get is that it slows down after a few hours and then closing the program becomes difficult. Can anyone who has installed the patch please help me out here. Especially if there are any regrets

Cheers
Troy

for what it's worth (these things are not readily generalizable), I have no memory leak.

PS that or my 1 gig ram is sufficiently large that the memory leak does not affect performance.

.
It's your Giga. The leak happens at 512M and lower.

I hate to turn a thread into a repetition of what has possibly been said.... a thousand time before, sorry all.

But... when I installed 1.3 I couldn't use any save games from 1.2. I had to save the save game folder uninstall Rome, delete the rome directory. Restart PC and reinstall Rome, then patch back to 1.2.

Worst patch problem I've had in ages. Could be just me, but I'd hate anyone to lose savegames mid-campaign.

Just make a copy of your Rome Total War directory before patching. You can continue to play 1.2 on the copy and patch the original to 1.3 and play that too.

For the previous patches 1.0 and 1.1 save games were compatible but after patching to 1.2 my save games either didn't work or broke after a few turns.

I have to say, although I'm only a few years in, I'm very impressed with 1.3 and, despite being in the middle of an enjoyable 1.2 campaign, won't be going back to 1.2 anytime soon.

The opening years of a Julii imperial campaign have seen the fastest AI land grab I've ever seen in any version, with Dacia, Gaul and Macedon sweeping over the rebel territories (I'm playing with FOW on so I don't know what's happening on the other side of the map). It's still too early to say whether the Scippii AI is broken (I have noticed their fleet with a couple of units apparrently on the way to Greece) but they lost the initial battle for Scyracuse, regrouped and took it later. Shortly afterwards they drove the Carthaginians off Sicily too. The Brutii have moved across the Adriatic in force and have taken two settlements. The Britons and Germans are at war, as are the Numidians and Spanish.

Additionally the Senate are giving me some relatively sensible missions compared to 1.2, with expansion into rebel territories and Gaul their immediate priority.

Overall the game is much prettier (mainly improved dynamic shadows and reflections) at no performance cost on my machine. The pre-battle speeches are more varied. Several annoying bugs are gone. The AI seems to be improved (although I've witnessed one particularly inept display where the a larger Gaul force routed, regrouped and lined up in formation facing away from me, allowing me to walk up to them and slaughter them from behind).

Not be a nag... but you prolly should have read the readme... I'm pretty certain it mentions that there is no savegame compatibility.

The Scipii AI is well and truly buggered.

Well it certainly didn't on the Sega page I downloaded it from.

Sounds good to me. I have now ordered BI anyway and it should be here in a couple of weeks. Can't wait to see the changes in the patch for myself
