Ok ... I already found out that a certain "YES" in the crusader unit file enables a unit to be recruited as an mercenary.
Question is rather dumb : Which one is it ??
I wana remove some certain units (siege engines), while adding others, but can´t find the right "YES" in the columne.

I should tell you that it is more realistic to have siege engines as mercs than perhaps any other unit.
What I've been doing is looking at the file in MS Works and then editing it in Notepad. (I leave wordwrap turned on.) It takes some time, but you will get used to reading the files this way.

And yeah I agree ... it would make sense ... but it makes the game too easy for the player ... the AI builds the siege engineer anyway.
It´s not to be historical or realistic but to improve the challenge ... meaning the fun http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif .
I personally think its utterly ridiculous the way AI uses siege engines pre-gunpowder type as battlefield artillery.
But thats just me I guess...
