View Full Version : Adding/Editing names

Anyone know if it's possible to add or edit names that are used in the game? When I first begin a campaign, it's nice to try and relate to different generals, heirs, and such. But later on, the names get very repetitive and I start to get hazy on them. It would be nice if I could go into a text file and add a bunch of historical names for each faction, just to make individuals more recognizable.

Well, I wasn't exactly looking for a mod, just an answer to my question. If it's not possible, then I don't want to mess with downloading a modified game file. I just didn't know if there was a text file in the game directory where I could edit names.

Okay, first thing you do is list down the names of the characters in command of the units, spotting those in command of heavy units like Chivalric knights and such. Then you simply find the names in the NAMES file in the LOC/ENG directory and change only the RIGHT HAND SIDE NAMES - do not, do not, do not, DO NOT, touch the names on the left or add more names. All you got to play with are the ones on the right hand side. Be warned that the Hungarian names are both forename and surname (You can get Howard Howard or Percy Percy) and the Muslim names are scattered across the three muslim cultural groups (Elmos, Turks, Egyptians)

Happy modding,

Actually, editing names is harder than that as it could have unwanted consequences.
The problem is that several factions and rebels share the same names.
For instance Sicilians use Italian names and if you try (as I did) to make them a Norman faction (Normandy only, ancestors of William in a 1000 mod) you have then Luigi and Lorenzo commanding your troops (beurk...).
Of course if you change Italian names it s a disaster in Venice...
Other situations are even more tricky because of the consequences on rebel names.
For instance, you could decide to turn the Danes out of the game (historically quite defensible) and use their faction to simulate Serbians (or whatever you like). After updating your new Balkan power names you would discover that the whole Scandinavia is populated by slavic immigrants.
So according to my research there are just three christian factions whose conversion (of names) has no consequence on others :
-Byzantines (but they are so important ...)
-English (well a little better, in the early period only)
-Hungarians (could be good, but it seems there are some problems with overlapping names).
As regards Muslim powers, there are cultural problems and overlapping names suggested by several contributors elsewhere.
I would be glad to know if there is an other possibility, such as appending the list of names (but I don t think it works).
This problem is really painful, it would be great to combine the use of the so called Free slots and new names...
We are left with twicking the factions, giving their former territories to a Power as they would default as rebels with the names of the new faction.
I would happily modify the names for the rebels (for instance converting the Finns into the Khazars) but it seems they are going to default to their initial reference (is this hardcoded ?).
Waiting for your comments and corrections.
