Verizon, in Historic First, Begins Large-Scale Rollout of Advanced Fiber-Optic Technology With Keller, Texas, Deployment; Announces Plans for Offering New Services

KELLER, Texas - The most significant transformation in over a century in the technology used to carry phone calls, data and video to and from homes and businesses is under way in Keller, Texas, a fast-growing community in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Verizon has begun installing in Keller a new technology known as fiber to the premises (FTTP), which uses fiber-optic cable and optical electronics to directly link homes and businesses to Verizon's network. The fiber-optic connections will replace traditional copper-wire links.

Although the use of fiber-optic technology is common throughout the telecom industry, Verizon is the first company to begin using it to directly connect homes and businesses to the network on a widespread scale.

"FTTP is moving from field trials and the lab to the real world, and it's happening in Keller first," Verizon Network Services Group President Paul Lacouture said at a news conference with city officials here today. "This technology will transform our network and the products we will be able to offer to consumers and businesses. Once deployed, for example, the slowest broadband connection we'll offer customers will be three times as fast as broadband speeds commonly available today. In short, we are building a new network that will make us the broadband leader in the 21st century."

Bob Ingalls, president of Verizon's Retail Marketing Group, said some of the new broadband access products will feature download speeds of 5 megabits per second, 15 megabits per second and 30 megabits per second. Verizon expects to begin marketing these products in Keller and elsewhere later this year. The new network will also support video applications and other new services.

"These services will be provided at a substantial value over anything that's in the market today - highly competitive pricing because we know that's what customers will expect," Ingalls said.

Its 20 dollars a month cheaper than my cable which ive been told was the fastest available to the home prior to this. My cable runs at 100mps. Is this better than my cable connection?

Sure, fiber-optic internet is a lot faster then cable or DSL.

What is FTTP or Fiber-To-The-Premises? (http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-fttp-or-fiber-to-the-premises.htm?referrer=adwords_campaign=fttp_ad=009521&_search_kw=fttp)

The technology is capable of transmitting data at speeds of up to 2.5Gbps, this amount is divided by the number of termination points on the PON to determine the actual bandwidth to each end point.

So like most technologies it isn't the speed of the overall pipe, it is how many others you have to share it with.

100Mbps connection ?!!

Somebody kill me... I pay about 45 $ for my 256k ADSL connection - shared with my homemate... Freakin' monopoly..

Eh, it's just where you are. My ISP just upgraded their network from 5Mbps to 10 Mbps. It serves me just fine. I can't honestly say that 100 Mbps would do me that much good.

I run naked in the house when my download rate reaches around 25k.. Think about the rest.. TTNet needs to be nuked..

And you can host a 4 on 4 in RTW with that?

Well, well... The state telecom mafia have announced their renewed monthly fees for 512K ADSL:

87 YTL = ($64, €54, £36)

Current 256K customers can keep their subscription, which costs 50 YTL/month.

If I talk any further, even the backroom can't stand it. ~:pissed:

I think it's this:

100Mbit/sec. is the bandwidth of your local network interface (Ethernet, USB etc.), not the internet speed.

Mouza, you just relieved me..~D

Interesting that our ADSL provider TTNet declares the "thing" as if there's something new out there.

All tariffs are the same, all speed remain the same except for those who have 256k connection with 3Gb/month quota. They'll automatically be upgraded to 512k. If one man ever on earth can come up with a rational explanation, I'll grant him a Senior Dumbness rank. And if the same thing would happen abroad, the users would protest it publically, I'm damn sure about it.. Hell..

Yes I can not understand how people get along with 3Gb quota. I can reach that limit in a few days only by surfing the net.. (Turkish saying : "Who ever died of liying ?")

I need another 80Gb HDD, because I just filled up the one I bought at the bbeginning of this summer. However, recording DVD media will be more logical in the long run.

I picked a 160 gb hard drive and a portable case for it for roughly $160. It requires no setup when in the case, and can connect through the USB to any Windows 2000 or higher system without drivers (it's read like a memory stick). The best part is that I can remove the drive from the portable case whenever I want, and just slap a new one in.

Hmm... I thought optical cable had unlimited bandwith, but was obviously too good to be true.

Right now I`m using an analog 56K modem, in hopefully not too long I`ll be surfing with several mbps with optical cable. Going to be a brilliant change. ~:smoking:
