View Full Version : What's the purpose of the posting restrictions?

This "seems" like a great independant forum to discuss ideas about MTW/RTW, yet if a thread that you would like to give/take input from happens to be in one of the other areas, we are restricted from being able to participate without starting a duplicate thread in this area... Seems kinda of redundant and also elitists to me.

Hello Gray_Lensman-san!
I assume you are a sci-fi buff.
The purpose is several fold.
Most of the forums you have to post on topic. If you post the wrong subject matter it will be moved and in some instances without a redirect attached it can be hard to find (normally we leaveout the redirect in the instances that the matter was rude).
The Entrance Hall you can post about anything from STW to RTW to Winning Strats to PC malfunctions. Just keep it PG as we have 10 to 80 year olds visiting.
The Entrance Hall is also a place to guide new forum users to the right place for help.
One of the reasons for posting restrictions is also to stop Trolls spamming the forums. Or people who are not interested in any aspect of the TW games debating gun control/abortion/creationsim vs evolution in the Backroom. There are a lot of griefers on the internet who tend to balk at posting restrictions at a far faster rate then TW strategists.
Overall the intent is to sift out trolls and help out our newest patrons.
I understand the reasoning for the junior member policy, but does it have to be so strict.
I spend a lot of time at the Colosseum reading some very interesting threads but when I come here there is very rarely anything relevant to reply to. As someone who has never played MTW or STW I have nothing to add to a lot of the threads here while I do have a lot I would like to add to the threads 'over there'.
I think it is a pity that the fear of trolling is so great that you make the boards so inaccessible to new members. After all if you have such a strict membership policy why do you need moderators at all? I hope I haven't blackballed myself with this little moan, but if I don't get promoted soon I will probably not bother coming back, which unfortunately is something a lot of people have already done.

You can post replies in the Entrance Hall and mods will move them across and/or discussions start here.
If you have seen the fighting on most forums you will understand the restrictions. We do occasionally get hit by waves of trolls. It is not a fear it is a reality.
You won't get blackballed for asking about forum policy. In fact we have the Watchtower forum for asking about policy, forum changes, desired outcomes, issues with moderators etc.
Personnaly I see the role of being a mod as a guide. Patrons should moderate their own behaviour, if they can't I normally just slap down a couple of smilies until they chill.
And also to make sure people join for total war, not for off topic :0

I think of it in terms of running a retail store. You wouldnt want a new trainee to close the store all by himself, would you? Just think of all the crazy and illegal things he will or will not do. This is why you give them a trial period to see how trustworthy they are, and eventually they will move up in the ranks.
Same thing for here. We dont want every spammer, troll, or idiot running amok in the Backroom, Colosseum, Mead Hall, and elsewhere, so we give them a trial period in the Entrance Hall. Dont think of being a Junior Member as being a "lesser" member. I posted quite a lot as a Junior Member, and continued posting in the Entrance Hall even after getting promoted (mostly because I was already known in the EH, and that I wanted a place to advertise my mod that would be seen by other new players).
Elitest? Not really. Quality? Definately.

And sometimes, idiots like me get promoted to member, and run amuck. It's shameful, really. O the humanity! And it only took me a week after that to get a friendly moderator warning. It seems to only take a few posts and a few days. Now, I don't speak for the treasured moderators, owners, or any other member. But a majority of the of the voices in my head voted and decided that demonstrating the ability to use a spellchecker seems to count for extra weight, as is use of good grammar and sentence structure. You can bet that split infinitives will result in an extra 45 days added to your sentence of being a Junior Member, so stay far, far away from them if you know what they are. If you don't know what they are, never mind. :viking: You may not spit on the floor or call the cat a bastard.
Wit, however, may be penalized. Making fun of safe things like J-Lo, Katie and Tom's test tube baby, or the pope's latest blog post about his polyps in German is A-OK. We get that it's a joke. Making jokes about Ludens' anything is NOT OK, and will result in you seeing the door. :eeeek:

Just mentioning my anything will result in immediate banning.
Seriously, I have no idea what you are talking about. I cannot ban people and as far as I know no one has been banned or even warned on my account. :surrender:

"....."
Obviously some people feel that the mods can be heavy handed. but that doesn't worry me. I don't even like l33t5p33ch or too many abbreviations so hopefully (apart from the odd typo), I won't have too many problems.
It isn't the probationary period I I have a problem with, it is being sidelined away from the main boards to a board where there can often be only a handfull of posts during the day when I am here. I would love to show that I can post a selection of witty and well thought out comments but there is so little going on here compared to the main boards. As an example I think there have been less than ten posts in the entrance hall while I have been looking today (6-7 hrs). I am sorry to moan so much but I have seen plenty of threads today in the colleseum which I would have liked to reply to but cannot due to the restrictions.
thats enough for me today- I'm off to TW.com
I may be some time

As noted good posts will start good threads anywhere, and if it is particular to a thread it sometimes gets moved across...
In this case, a little patience will have a nice reward.
The EH system is worth it, so post a few screenies and ask a few questions and engage in small talk, this too shall pass

Heavy handed? I'm not sure about this forum, just joined it like last month. But if there's anything about heavy handed mods, well visit the previous forum where I came from :keeps rubbing salt on wounds: That forum have only like seven mods compared to this forum and somehow, they are always on a 24 hours shift. Just one small error or breach in their CoC, bam! You get banned within mintues.
And don't worry about not able to reply or post witty comments on topics in other places. I started a new topic in the entrance hall praising frogbeastegg's story. ~D Basically, like someone said, you can post anything in the Entrance Hall. All you have to do is to point out which thread you are referring to and from which place. And yes, keep it PG or G.
k... don't worry, just pray and hope. Fact is, i got just promoted to member about a day or so. ~
