Denver pot issue passes by thin margin
Denver residents Tuesday voted to legalize possession of small amounts of marijuana, but the state attorney general said the vote was irrelevant because state law will still be enforced.

The measure passed 54 percent to 46 percent.

It doesn't supersede the state law so it is still illegal but I think these guys are going about it the right way, get the cities then the state. If they had gone after the state it would have been voted down but by starting at the city level they will be able to grow and be taken seriously.

Nice job ya stoners. ~;)

hmm I dont really get the US system, so a city can pass laws and all other stuff, but if the State doesnt do the same, it doesnt matter!? ~

It only doesn't matter if the state has a law which is in direct conflict with the city ordance.

However has a grass roots effort - getting the largest city to pass such an ordance can have impact on other areas of the state.

As it system the United States political and government institutions can be very confusing. Just wait until you add counties into the mix. You have the following types of governments in the United States

City
County
State
Federal

Now when you look at the county aspect of government - it gets very confusing with the County Tax assesor and who they work for, The Sheriff department, and several other inconsistent little quarks - but when placed together the City - County system works well. (In my opinion)

Grass roots campaign from the bottom - up is what seems to be happening in Colorado at this time

Apparently I wan't the first to notice that... :jester:

Now we just have to wait for someone to show up and say, "NOOOOOO!!! We can't legalise marijuana because it's WRONG! What's next, state-funded blue cheer clinics?! Children going mad whilst high on the devil's harvest?!"

Seriously- all right, Denver! Of all the places I expected marijuana to be legalised first, Denver was among the last- far out!

That wasn't grass. That was a high dosage of acid. No strain of marijuana can produce those psychotic effects, unless there is something wrong with the marijuana itself. I would be afraid to smoke what you were smoking when you wrote those threads. :uhoh2:

And after all the damn fuss the Americans made when we were about to de-criminalise it. Sheesh. I hope this goes a little farther than an impossible-to-enforce law.

Denver in particular, and Colorado in general, have had a huge Demographic shift during the last 15 years. Literally thousands of Californians have moved into the state, dynamically shifting its politics.

I guess that explains why they voted to nerf TABOR (tax payer's bill of rights). ~:mecry:

Denver has the Nuggets, the Rockies, and the Broncos, all of which require substantial enhancement to want to pay to see.

Before:"Hey, want to pay $80 to see the Nuggets game?"

"No"

After: " Dude, let's get twisted and go see the Nugs"

"Cool"

Right on. Rocky Mountain high ... Colorado. I don't think this will be starting any legalization landslides though. Pity.

This is an interesting development.

The country appears to be moving in this direction very slowly and with open eyes.

Marijuana criminalization delegitimizes the war on drugs.

Criminalization of this drug is what creates the "gateway" to other harder drugs.

This is because an experimenter will sample MJ, and realizing that it really is not so horrible, they may consider experimenting with other drugs as well.

However, if marijuana is legal, then harder drugs will retain the stygma they have earned.
