Ok, I have'nt played Shogun with the 1.12 patch on yet, so I don't know if its been fixed;
BUT, if I routed an enemy army and I manage to catch him in a pincer movement with some hidden troops or whatever, why then, when his fleeing troops crash into my non fleeing line of pointy spears (or large no-dachi), do I lose loads of men and he loses very few.

Any ideas gang?

chasing fleeing enemy in the early version of the game proved to be a Pyrric victory for just that reason. Some people, in a futile gesture of explanation, tried to convice others that fleeing troops fought better due to desperation, etc. Nonetheless, the patch makes attacking/chasing routing enemy much more effective and realistic so the sooner you get that patch, the sooner you'll be winning on better terms.

Actually chasing them wasn't too bad as I recall. It was getting in their way that really got your men shredded.

Yeah, standing in the way was suicide, I understood that the problem was largely due to the fleeing enemy having a continuous charge bonus applied as they were running into your men, the game didn't discriminate between running into battle and running from battle.

OK, so I take it that chasing his troops is better with the new patch, but getting in the way of them so that they run through your line is not a good idea?
Strange, I figured the good ole pincer movement would have been a perfect way of obliterating the enemy.

Thanks for the input guys http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Pincer wasn't viable before the patch, but now it is. Your troops may still take casualties if they're in the enemies' way when the vile foe takes a run for it, but those casualties are generally well within the acceptable range. Yari Cavalry getting overrun by fleeing spearmen and similar mismatches may still prove costly, but it's better to use pincer than not to.

I have the patch, but my men still get slaughtered by fleeing foemen especially if they get in the way. Which is rather strange. I would have thought that the ideal way of catching runners would be to stand in between them and their destination. Even with the patch its still slightly dubious. These guys are after all broken and running. Historically fleeing troops have always incredibly vulnerable unless supported by steady comrades. Cavalry especially should take them apart much more easily. Remember that many fleeing soldiers would discard armour and weapons in an attempt to get away faster or in an attempt to look innocent. In STW routing troops are still far too effective.

I have to agree with you there Slyspy,the safest way is to chase and attack from behind.Even if you attack routing troops from above and charge downhill into them you lose more warriors than you should.Attacking from behind you still lose some,but not too bad.

The worst damage occurs when a pursuing archer unit is overcome. I've learned to watch them carefully in pursuits.
You need to target the units that get behind with the units they have in front of them. Otherwise they get hit while 'moving'.

Yeehaa! Good to see some people help parts of their army flee by guarding the gauntlet! When my troops flee, I line their escape path with my best troops and wish them good luck on their journey home. Heck, at that time, who wants to fight a battle with all that pageantry going on?!? I expect my enemy to join the line and salute the fleeing masses too...
