I just came across this game called Legion Arena. Check it out (http://www.slitherine.com/index2.htm). It seems like RTW without the empire management part and a little mix of role playing. You apparantly start out with a bunch of weak peasents and after ever battle your units have the chance "level up" gaining new abilities and bonuses. From the trailer it seems that although the unit scale is lower than RTW (inf:48 cal:24), it seems that the unit models are better. Also the combat model seems to have been designed be a "double world wargaming champion"(taken from the official site.) Sadly you can only choose to play as either the Romans or Gauls.

Here's a list of features:

There is a thread about its demo here... Have it myself and was quite pleasantly surprised. Sure the graphics aren't too great, but the game is very lively. My main points of arguments lies in its perpetual feel of skirmish... You never feel you are part of a real battle, just some fringe skirmish (unlike Panzer: Phase One and Two where you feel like you are the spearhead), and the battles are over in an instant. While that is also true for RTW it is much worse here where the number of battles are far far less than even a single RTW campaign.

I was disappointed by the demo after some of the raves it got here.

Battles are too short, too small, too simple. Just keep upgrading and healing your legionnaries and attack. You're bound to win.

And I dislike the order limitations. A similar system might be needed in tactical battle games, but I don't like the one here.
