View Full Version : Help from anyone interested in the Ptolemies?

Something that might be a nice added touch (but we just don't have the time or manpower to actually put together right now in the push towards getting the Open Beta out) for the Ptolemaioi would be adding their royal Egyptian names. We know what they were for almost all the Ptolemies apparently, and it might be a nice touch to have accurate ones for the family members who start the game off - and then we can randomize them for successive faction leaders.

So here is the deal: Each Ptolemaic pharaoh had three royal names (a Horus Name, a Nebty Name, and a Golden Horus Name). Ptolemy II was Hunuqeni, Werpehti, Sekhaensuitef (the three names). This meant: "The strong youth", "whose might is great", "who his father has raised to the throne". His is a short one though. Ptolemy IV was: 1. Hunuqeni Sekhaensuitef 2. Werpehti Menekhibkhernetjerunebu Nedjtienhenmemet 3. Sewadjabaqet Sehedjgesuperu Semenhepu-midjehuty-aa-aa Nebhabused-miptahtatenen-itymire ~;)

If someone would be willing to look these up (the easy part) and look up the meanings (the hard part!) for about 20 (each, total about 60), we would be willing to either bring you in to continue to work with the Ptolemaioi inside EB or we'll hail you as an "Official EB Benificiary" with a banner if you like. ~D

You can find the names at the top of each Pharaoh's page here: http://www.phouka.com/pharaoh/pharaoh/dynasties/dyn33/dyn33.html

Getting the known Ptolemaic names first would be best, then for a few more we can dip into the earlier ones to give some variation.

But you won't be able to find all the translations online. You will probably need a good library, but translations should be able to be found (we don't expect folks to be able to read hieroglyphics, but if you can, that's definitely a plus! ~:joker: ). Anyone up for it? There's no reason we should make multiple people be working on this at the same time, so anyone can express interest by replying to this, but the first person who says that they are *certain* that they can do it (i.e., that they have the resources available to them and that they are willing to do it in something like a reasonable amount of time, which is something we can talk about), then we will post it to make sure we aren't reduplicating work here.

So how about it? Any takers? It's a little daunting maybe, but I think it would be a nice addition to the traits and there is agreement enough inside the mod to ask publicly here about it. You can reply here, but if you have specific questions feel free to PM me.

To overcome difficulties is to experience the full delight of existence, meatwad. Or so said Schopenhauer (well, probably not exactly like that).

Seriously- go for it, man! Do it yourself if noone in EB wants to. They might induct you into the team for this very purpose.

Wait- are you already a member? If so, conscript someone else to do it for you.

Ya. No joke. He is one of the few EB core contributors.

Losing him would be like losing an arm.

together with Teleksos, we have all the info except for:
Ptolemy Eupator
Cleopatra II
Ptolemy VII
Cleopatra Berenice III
Ptolemy XI
Berenice IV
Ptolemy XIII
Ptolemy XIV

I couldn't find even the original names for these guys, so they might be very tough. The rest are all from only 2 sources, and it wouldn't hurt to have a 3rd to confirm everything

pss, teleklos, it's 'EB Benefactor', not 'EB Beneficiary'. Beneficiary implies you just helped someone, not someone helped you :)
