View Full Version : Frontroom Quality has Gone WAY Downhill
The quality of the Frontroom forum has gone way downhill.
The Frontroom used to be a cool place to have & read intelligent discussions.
Lately, it's been almost nothing but worthless drivel spam.
The decline has been gradual, over a period of several months. It seems to have now reached rock-bottom.
To me, the decline of the Frontroom makes this site as a whole less appealing. I don't even feel like bothering to read the Frontroom anymore, much less make a new thread in it.
My suggestion: an outright ban on all "forum games" threads, or any other thread which could reasonably be considered spam by a reasonable, intelligent person.
Please fix the Frontroom and restore it back to it's former high quality.

Patrons are free to pick and choose the threads in which they want to participate. If patrons don't like a subject, they can exercise their free will and choose to view and/or participate in something else.
If a patron wishes to see a particular kind of thread, then they should post one. Post two. Post ten ... . A patron has no business prohibiting another patron from posting a type thread if the subject matter is within the accepted rules of the board, and passes the scrutiny of the moderator team.
Some patrons would do well to loosen ... their collars.

No offense to the fine mods of this site, but if the type of sheer garbage threads that have taken over the Frontroom are not against the rules, then my point is that they should be. When a great forum becomes worthless, it's time for a change.
In terms of your "post a good thread then!" idea: not worth it because it will be buried under mountains of drivel threads in a day or two, before most quality posters have had a chance to see it. Hence it is not worth the time, energy, or thought involved in making a quality thread in the Frontroom.
No...the solution to this needs to come straight from the top down.
Nonsense. "Have someone else fix it for me" is bollocks. No one says you have to like the Frontroom, and you're refusing even to contribute to what you think would be a more intellectual atmosphere.
Ahem. "Sucks to your Ass-mar, Piggy."

Pandas are free to pick and choose the threads in which they want to participate. If pandas don't like a subject, they can exercise their free will and choose to view and/or participate in something else.
If a panda wishes to see a particular kind of thread, then they should post one. Post two. Post ten ... . A panda has no business prohibiting another panda from posting a type thread if the subject matter is within the accepted rules of the board, and passes the scrutiny of the moderator panda team.

You can always bump your thread. There's even a nice little smilie for it now. Furthermore, if it gets buried, perhaps it'd be good to wonder why more patrons weren't interested in it, adjust, try again, etc.
Believe it or not, I agree with your assessment that the "quality" of the threads has declined. Personally though, I'd describe them as "less interesting to me personally," to avoid sounding like a pompous ... patron. Of course in my case that's a moot point.

Now I shall demonstrate, in the finest of ways, what I believe Navaros is complaining against:
Pandas are free to pick and choose the threads in which they want to participate. If pandas don't like a subject, they can exercise their free will and choose to view and/or participate in something else.
If a panda wishes to see a particular kind of thread, then they should post one. Post two. Post ten ... . But I LOVE PANDAS!!!!!!!! OMG LOL!!!1!!111!!!111ONE!1!!
(No, it's not BP's post. It's mine.)
Navaros, if you wish to "improve" the Frontroom, post threads of your own interests. Trust me, people will see and respond. I rarely ever started a thread in my almost 1000+ posts at the .org, but I answered many. Who knows? Our interests might collide.

hmmm...sent any emails lately?
anyway, this place is what you users make it. why not start some threads that interest you?
To me, the decline of the Frontroom makes this site as a whole less appealing. I don't even feel like bothering to read the Frontroom anymore, much less make a new thread in it. Just because you're not having fun doesn't mean other can't have theirs.
Because if it isn't fun, people won't post at all. Whether anyone gets stimulated by colors, wind, jokes or drying paint, it's the same stimulation.
Not much the mods can do except wait for the Org. members to start more interesting threads.
I've mentioned before, several times, members may use the Frontroom to post about music, art, television, movies, cars, motorcycles, women, books, concerts, mathematics, science, astronomy, house appliances, women, dogs, cats, bats, rats, computers, electronics, speakers, haircuts, family stories, world travel, history, philosophy, medicine, women, beer, whiskey, restaurants, forestry, mining, juggling, sword swallowing, architecture, work stories, personal experiences, women, cereal, toasters, leisure activities and a million other things.
Yet far, far too often the same people post threads with titles like "What is your favorite number between 1 and 10 RIGHT NOW!!! YES RIGHT NOW!!!" and "Which Org. member do you want to beat up?" Groan.
Only two things will help - new people visiting the Frontroom and posting, and regular Frontroom users using their imagination and "taking the risk" of starting new threads that might go somewhere.

*tries to be serious* Beirut is right. People should post more quality threads at the frontroom and the backroom mods should move all non-politically oriented ones there. The backroom should be reserved for debates and the frontroom should become the true tavern.

Recently I'm having difficulty finding a topic to discuss. Any suggestions ? (except from those "Man, get a life", or "Grow up, mate" ~D)
By the way, Navaros may have tried to put his anger towards "..Right now!" threads.. I'm well frustrated by such topics. A thread saying "What are you breathing..Yes Right NOW!" will be opened soon and I'll do my best to tell the...ahem..guy..about what he's doing so hard that I will get a universal ban...
anyway, this place is what you users make it. why not start some threads that interest you?
Because as already stated, they'd get lost amongst mountains and mountains of spam drivel within a day or too. Hence's it's not worth it.
Also, it seems most quality posters do not go to the Frontroom any more. Which is understandable, because why would they bother wasting their time with a forum that is over 90% drivel? Which just makes making a thread in there be doubley not worth it - because the other good posters have already stopped participating in that forum anyhow.
As for "this place is what you users make it" - then why are there even forum rules? If that statement were true, then rules would be a moot point. Obviously, rules exist for the sake of making this a good place to have quality discussion. Therefore, it is logical that since the Frontroom is no longer a good place to have quality discussion, more rules should be implemented in order to make it so that that is fixed.
@The suggestion I should be directing anger to the "what are you doing right now" threads - I have. That would be included under the "forum games" category, as listed in my original post.
While I agree (to a certain extent) with your complaint, I don't think your proposed solution will work. Culling all low-level post won't increase the level of those who post them. It will simply make the frontroom empty. You cannot force people to make intellectual posts if they don't want too, and frankly I don't think you should do this even if you could.
Therefore I also think that if you want a higher quality in the frontroom, you should set the right example. Your post won't get buried that quickly (even in the frontroom there are less than 30 new threads a day) and I always view all new threads on a forum to see if there is anything good.

Nonsense. Perhaps the subjects of threads are less interesting, but the replies still come from the full range of patrons (pandas?).
The only way to get things more interesting is to start your own topics. As Beirut said it can be about virtually anything, although it seems that quite frequently posters go for a 'favourite' topic, with a limited range of possible directions for discussion. Start a topic on something you saw today, a hobby, something you'd advise people to try sometime. Trust me, if it's anything even remotely interesting the posts will come!
As for "this place is what you users make it" - then why are there even forum rules? If that statement were true, then rules would be a moot point. Obviously, rules exist for the sake of making this a good place to have quality discussion.
The rules are to keep things within bounds. Without rules the place would be taken over by flamers and trolls using horrendous language like on many, many other forums.
The Frontroom rules are than fair and allow a wide range of discussions - No swearing, insults, politics, religion, porn, or links that violate any of the previous. Within those boundaries, the place is yours to do with as you please.
The Frontroom is the Org's swimming pool. As long as you don't pee in it you can splash around all you want.

You don't need to try to improve it by your self. I could help by keeping any good thread on the first part of the front page.
*Wait.. nah. The above plan would never work, it's too crazy. I know what we should do; mongoose for admin 05!!! first i'll perma ban anyone who posts(or has posted) a "yes right now" Topic. then i would perma ban beirut and BKS for not doing something sooner. After that, i would ban anyone who posts in the back room, becuase we don't want to risk them starting an offensive topic. and the concpet of offensive will be reworked as well, no more mr.reasonable! Typos, one word being used too much, and any post that i read while i'm in a bad mood, will all be deleted and the thread starter will be perma banned. Tosa and the other admins will have go to beofre they stop me............................
Or maybe we should try the first one ~;)
*Only a joke ~:)
