Police confirm body is likely top terror suspect Azahari
JAKARTA (Agencies): Indonesia's national police chief confirmed Thursday that one of the bodies at the scene of a shootout between police and a gang of terror suspects was likely that of top terror suspect Azahari bin Husin.
National Police chief Gen. Sutanto told reporters Thursday, after visiting the site in Malang, East Java of the previous night's shootout between authorities and terror suspects, that one of the bodies appeared to be Azahari - the most wanted Malaysian national accused of being a senior operative of the al-Qaeda-linked regional terror group Jamaah Islamiyah (JI).
Sutanto toured the destroyed house in the town of Batu where three men were killed Wednesday, and said he saw two bodies -- one of which appeared to be Azahari, one of Asia's most wanted men.
"When observing two bodies on the site, one of them looked like Dr. Azahari, but we still need to identify them through the use of DNA," Sutanto was quoted by the state-run news agency, Antara, as saying after an inspection of the house allegedly used as a hideout by Azahari and his group before beingraided by anti-terror police.
Authorities had waited for a bomb squad to check for any remaining explosives before entering the house on Thursday. Some 11 explosions, one of which was thought to have been Azahari blowing himself up, rocked the house after police surrounded itWednesday evening and a volley of gunfire erupted.
Sutanto said one of the bodies still could be identified, although some of its parts had been dismembered. Other bodies were unrecognizable from the explosions, he said.
"For confirmation we have to wait for the results of their DNA tests which will be carried out in Indonesia," Sutanto said. (**)
