Hey, I'm trying to download a german subtitled film off of Limewire and when I try to watch it, it says I don't have the right codec(s).

The film is Der Untergang (Downfall). It says it's type is avi. What should I do?

P.S. I'm also not very computer literate at all. So the basics will have to do sorry :(

a quick google search got me this :

http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=avi

So you'd need something as DivX to play it.

I'm not fully certain I know what you want me to do with this....~

Ok, I downloaded Divx and installed it and it still doesen't work. (assuming that was supposed to fix it). Is there a specific codec(s) I can download so I can watch this? If so exactly where? I'm sorry for my computer illiteracy I'm still new to the more advanced stuff.

There are no U.S. suppliers and the U.K. ones don't work...~:mecry:

Well do you have quicktime media player?

That should make it work, if DivX didn't do the trick.

other than that, someone else might be able to help.

Ok, I have both and looks like I'll have to wait for it to finish DLing. (I didn't know) how do I take the DLd video and put it on quicktime?

Dutch_guy

you could just double click on the file once it has finshed DL ing.

It will automaticly play it in quicktime, or Windows media player, no problem either way.

Well when I double click on it, (while its not finished) it comes up as windows media player, not quicktime. how do I get it to do quick time?

So I really don't need any codecs?

well while its not finished, you shouldn't expect to much of it.

Sometimes it just doesn't show, even if 90 % is DLed.

SO be patient, and wait till it has finished Downloading, the n you should be able to watch it.

In media player of QT, that doesn;t really matter.

Try getting RealPlayer. Always did the trick for me.

Is Limewire a legal way to acquire movies? If not, I'll have to close this.

you pay for Lime wire ( and Lime-wire pro )

So asuming you payed for it, it should be legal.

Try hitting the g-spot, it'll tell you what codec is needed to play the file

you pay for Lime wire

Only for the pro version (or else I need to go and check wether all my money is still there). And I don't think you can legally download movies from it, as it's a filesharing thingy, so you're simply getting them from other users without paying for them.

Ok I downloaded it and I don't know how to apply it to the movie. Well I don't know how to really use it...

I've been able to put the first 1/2 into quicktime but it's different. the audio seems 100% fine but the video is non-existent. It says it doesent have it. What do I do?

P.S. I know I'm asking a lot here but does anyone have limewire so they could understand what I'm talking about?

Limewire is just a way of sending files; it has absolutely nothing to do with playback issues.

You should download G-Spot, as someone here suggested. That will tell you what software you need. Here's the link for G-Spot:

http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

Most likely you need Divx or Xvid. There's no reason not to download both. Here's a link for the Divx codec:

http://www.divx.com/divx/play/

And here's a link for Xvid:

http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/

P.S.: Strictly speaking, there is no legal way to acquire movies on Limewire. However, when a film has not been released in your country, and there is no information on whether or not the film will ever be distributed, it's not unethical to check Limewire. Since the poster was asking about downloading a foreign film with subtitles, it's probably safe to assume he is within the moral right, if not the legal.

Well, you can also get Limewire Pro for free as well.~;)

If it's not DivX, it's probably XVid. Search the Google for both and download the proper codecs from their official websites.

Also find and install VLC Media Player, which can play virtually anything made on this planet. ~

For an all-time comfort :

www.codecguide.com

From the left-hand side menu, get K-Lite Codec Pack Full and install it on default values.. You'll barely come up with missing codecs after that..
