Divorce rates hit 4-year low (http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,17214425-421,00.html)
DIVORCE numbers are down everywhere in Australia except Queensland, new figures from the Australian Bureau of statistics reveal.
While the number has fallen in NSW by 7.8 per cent - from 16,285 in 2003 to 15,007 in 2004 - it still had the most divorces.
The latest research comes just days after news the national fertility rate has climbed to 1.77 babies per woman, the highest since 1997.
Sydney University lecturer in human development Stephen Juan said the fall in divorce numbers may actually be a reaction to tough economic and social climate.
"When the pressures in society are greater, families get stronger. It's called the Family Haven Principle," Dr Juan said.
"If it's rough out there, the family provides protection, if it's easy out there, the family doesn't have to be as strong."
Or if you actually are procreating your instincts say you are on a good thing and stick around... those naughty naughty little genes.
