you could've been a little more helpful with your thread title.

not really.

11th November:
R.C. Saints - Martin of Tours
Opening of carnival season in Germany ("Fasching" on 11-11, at 11:11), the Netherlands, and other countries
Also see November 11 (Eastern Orthodox liturgics)
Angola - Independence Day (1975)
Colombia - Independence of Cartagena, from the Spanish Army in (1918)
Poland - Independence Day (1918)
South Korea - Pepero Day
United States - Veterans Day in the (Formerly "Armistice Day") Armistice Day in France and Belgium: end of World War I (1918)
Remembrance Day in the Commonwealth of Nations

I think most members of the org recognise November 11th for one reason only.

desecrated war graves in South Africa.

It is pretty sad that graves are being ruined like this. I wonder, is it an anti-British sentiment, or simply poverty that prompted the thieves to their actions?

It is pretty sad that graves are being ruined like this. I wonder, is it an anti-British sentiment, or simply poverty that prompted the thieves to their actions?Judging from what I know and have seen, it is probably complete and utter indifference. Think of the lack of moral and social compass that surfaced in the rioting in France, multiply that by one hundred and you get some picture of the social, economic and moral destitution in parts of South Africa.

From the article it was not so much an deliberate desecrated of war graves because they were British. But a desecrated war graves because the crosses were made out of iron - and the area is extremely poor like Adrian has mentioned.

Shameful only in the crime of robbing from a graveyard - not because they were disrepecting fallen soldiers in my opinion.

All 217 of the cemetery's British graves from the Boer War have been stripped of their cast iron crosses. These heavy objects, each marked "For King and Empire" with the name of the fallen soldier, disappeared overnight, carried away by thieves who probably made about £400 by melting them down for scrap.£400? For a half an evenings worth of work? ~

Louis, what about all the metal from the torched cars?

edit: sorry if that sounded turdy, I was just thinking that there's lots of them and they may still roll along ok if you change the wheels. Not that I've ever dealt with a torched car so I'm just speculating.

Some years ago, a nearby city was having some serious problems with folks stealing the copper coils out of large commercial air conditioning systems. Crack heads would come up with an axe, and demolish them for copper that they could get quick cash from at the recycler.

Also, crack heads were crawling under pier and beam houses, and cutting copper pipes with hacksaws for the same reason...

oh my God, RH, that happens in the city where I currently reside.

If you have an empty property then pray that it isn't by the ghetto because it'll lose its plumbing if it is

Louis, what about all the metal from the torched cars?Metal? There's not a scrap of metal in my car. It's all made of cardboard, rubber and metallic paint. And filled to the brink with gasoline and home-made explosives.

Light a match anywhere near it and you're going down...http://www.my-smileys.de/smileys2/teufel.gif

That is quite a pitty. A soldier deserves better then that.

True the graves should be treated better.

Just remember though the Boer War was fought by the British Empire against independent states so that the British could get their hands on the gold.

The Boers farms were burnt down and also the use of concentration camps lead to the deaths of over 40,000 civilians and of those 22,000 were Boers under the age of 16.

The avaerage dick soldier wouldn't have gotten much out of it.
They deserve better sldier or not, and if those people have a concience I hope they realise that what they have done is terrible.
But we can all blame it of that little turd Blair who deosn't give a crap about anything British unless it gives him money.
Honesly you fellow Britishers back home you need to do something instead of being so British and taking it.
Dare I say it, be a bit French (Holy crap don't kill me, I'll do it myself!) and actually protest against the entire regime. For decades its been the same yet we do nothing. Thats it I'm off to plot the imperialist take over of Britain, assemble the pudding commandos! :charge:

Let us ride Adrian the two conquering heros.
One a damned fine Englishman with the sole purpose of being English, the other a complete and utter European with utterly liberal ideas and who knows nothing of the British temprement.

Sounds good to me.
