View Full Version : Middle Earth Map Making - Request
OK - after looking around at the info on the mods section of the board, I have found to my surprise that we can edit the maps, just that no examples have been released yet...
I also heard talk of someone doing a middle-earth map. I was wondering, if that is true, whether we could pool resources. If not, are there people around who would like to join up on making a Middle Earth strat map?
There would be (as I see it) four distinct parts of this map-making, as far as I understand it.
1. Making a large 'pretty' map based on (maybe scanned from?) the middle-earth maps in the books.
2. Putting together and placing 100 land provinces and 40-odd sea provinces.
3. Sorting this map out into hard defined provinces and assigning them colours in the .lbm files
4.Sorting out the scripting and port locations so the map works properly.
These sections have to be done in this order really, I was wondering - if there is nobody currently working on such a map, whether some real LoTR fans who would not feel up to the technical map-making could put together a map with around 100 province names. Then somebody who is familiar with the method could use this and from it make the lbm's. Then somebody could go at the scripting...
it is possible, we all know that, and if a group do it - then maybe it can really get done...(as for units, I am currently working on a kind of 'system' for making unit modding much easier.

erm...normally I wouldn't dare bump something under a week old...for fear of the almighty mods deserved wrath, but with all the PAFing going on at the moment, I don't want this to get lost.
Not looking for one person to do everything, even one person to do a small part would be something to speed matters up...
ok...I'll give it time...
fear not for your threads gentle beings,
i'm going all the way back to page's 6, 7 and 8 for the PAF's,
you can only see 7 and 8 if you select view all topics from the drop down box at the top right of the page
- although 8 is gone now,

Whitey, maybe you saw my post on the Fantasy Mod thread. My modding/computer skills when compared to those on this forum are infantile but if you think that I can be of any use let me know.
I could always give advice!! For example, don't limit mod to the War of the Ring but include the 2nd, 3rd ( maybe 1st although it would probably require second campaign map) ages-- and mixing Tolkien with Warhammer would be like Galadriel marrying Grima Worm Tongue (imho).
Anyway, if you think that I'd help rather than hinder let me know.

aah - whatever ages you do - the map will be the same.
Really steps 1 and 2 don't need any technical tech skill - just a LoTR fanatic http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
and I think the map, at least (personally I am in favour of the whole mod being http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif ) should be as 'Tolkein' as possible.

I have a map of middle earth which might be useful to start with. It's 365kb big but I have no place to upload it.
Yea i can supply some maps too, 2000x2000 wise, nothing special just from websites, we should look into legal issues before using one of those tho.

Just created a geoshities website to upload the file. See if it's of any use.

Wasent there a lord of the rings game where you moved about armies but dident have to battle, hmm anyone know the name of it?

Well, the 1st Age takes place in Beleriand which is underwater during 2nd Age & LOTR but I guess that can be got round.
I think that I can help with steps 2 and (with a little tutoring) 3. I'll be able to devote some time to it starting Thursday.
Hey! I'm an official Patron now. The portrait went from effeminate to butt ugly.
I'm honored (if somewhat insulted).

Well since the Roma MOD collapsed I have deicded to make a MOd of a game I always wanted making, it does require an absolute change to the map, infact it has to show the entire world on it, anyway I suggest we set up a group and help eachother with the campmap remaking.

nice map Pantha, next thing we need really is to create a tga map which is the same size (or about) as the MTW tga map.
This would need to be *big*. I'll give it a go myself. I might have to add (imagine) a few extra details in the east, and a bit more onto the map in the south. (Far Harad, the sunlands...) without butchering the map as it is.
It may take a little while, but when that is done - then the way is open for real progress...
as for all campmappers working together, I do like the idea, there are a lot of things on this forum that could help us also...lots of info to help. What I really think is if we actually get started on the work and moving fowards then we can build up some momentum, and each map will be easier than the last.

Yes there was. It was called War in Middle Earth. I still have it on 5" floppies.

It's not the size of the army that matters. It's how you use it.

Coool! I'm glad the map is of any help. I'm so curious how this project is going to develop.
everything is progressing - there is a lot to do yet, but it seems we have a good map which we can work on to make the big map. It is from there that it will get really interesting.

okay, great. Well, I don't have any mod skills but I'm good with computers (I'm a system engineer) so if I can help you with some things, let me know on arjanvanpanhuis@hotmail.com
I don't have too much free time though to put hours of work in it every single week.

i'm also interested in doing something along these lines. in fact, i was one of the people who mentioned this weeks ago... but what I've found is that editing the campaign map is no easy undertaking, and no one really knows whether it will actually work or not.
i'm also thinking that some historical battles would be nice...battle of the five armies, the last alliance, the battle of the pelennor fields, helm's deep, etc... recreating those battles on your own computer screen would be pretty danm fun.
also, lets not forget that units representing orcs, elves, and men will need to be made and animated...no small task. but it would be incredibly fun to play, i will say that. hehehe.
editing the map is possible - we just have to get it exactly right - in some cases to the pixel I think, hence the hard work.
