Any line of ships will do. You just need an unbroken line of ships between the provence (with a port) were your men are, to were you want then to go. If you are at war with a faction there ships can bockade you if they are in the same sea area as one of your ships.
What m52nickerson said.
Also, you can check which seas you "control" (i.e. have ships in and where no enemy ships are present) by pressing down "v". Controlled seas would show up in green.

hmmm, i've tried that (pressing 'v')and nothing happens, along with most of the other key tips on the campaign map ('z', 'x')...which version does that work in? do you have to have VI?
Byzantine_Fury, remember that you can move troops INTO any coastal province by using a sea link, but you can't move them out again by sea until that province has a port, so make sure you can win the battle! also applies to princesses, emissaries etc. i currently have a princess stuck in Crete with only the misogynistic Byzantine emperor for company, and i can't get her out again cos he won't build a port!

Yes, the 'v' command only works in VI.

In the seas there are little provinces.
You need a ship in every 1 of the provinces from your port,
all the way to the port or province you wish to go to,
Other ships also sail the seas so you can loose a sea province easy,
Reinforce your boats so they have more than 1 boat in each stack an you should find you are ok,
Your allys can be in your sea province and you wont fight,
if an opponent is in your sea province your line is broken.
Hope that helps a lil more

Yes, the 'v' command only works in VI.
The V works for me without VI but with the patch - not that it matters, you should put VI on... I will as soon as I finish the campaign I am on.
A quick question.
If I declare a crusade, can I use the naval transports of other catholic factions?
Definitely no, other christians can even blockade your crusade, something they don´t dare when it´s travelling on land.
No, but I could swear the AI crusades use anybody's hipping lanes when they feel like it.
Something I'd like to see in a future game would be a way to negotiate passage with a catholic fleet. The fourth crusade hired the entire Venitian navy to transport them and secure their supply route!
If I declare a crusade, can I use the naval transports of other catholic factions?
Yes, if they are allied to you. I don't think crusades can use the ships of neutral factions though, and enemy ships will blockade your crusade's passage.
Neutral Ships are fair game as well. Germans used my ships for their crusades on many occasions.
Thanks... that's something to consider next time the Sicilians and/or Italians offer me an alliance.
