The most angry response I ever got was from a post that I didn't feel was very controversial. I said that I didn't want the US to be the most powerful country in the world (or I wished it weren't or something). I got burning responses from a few young guys whose names I can't remember. But I think ShingenMitch2 was one of them.

I was?

I probably was. The board was a little different back then. Not better, not worse. I am not one who hankers for golden ages in the past. There was a little more middle ground for debate and people tended to argue from all sides, with people switching around on different points. One strong trend, and a negative one, in the last 2 or 3 years has been the 'staunch conservative' poster. Someone who comes on the board with the intention of being a 'conservative' in everything and having that as their entire identity and source of opinions.

This trend has also meant that there is a deliberate attempt to create two groups on the board - them and us. Which in turn impacts how friendly the place is.

There have been some fairly heated discussions in here over the years, still too bad when things get personal. We're at our best when we debate the issues (and don't forget the totally hilarious crap that is brought in every day so we don't have to search all over the web)

Spot on. I remember the .Org as being less refined but we didnt have this conservative nonsence. People had oppinions and they didnt just recite what they heard on Fox fiction.

It certainly gets boring when the only debate you get comes from a propaganda oppinion that will not budge.

Also Nazis, Fascists, people who think that a woman is the animal most close to man ~:joker: , and people who would just insult you knowing that they can afford a warning or two, were not as 'entitled to have their oppinion' as they later became.

Back then you could say @#$% and $%#%^$#@& and also if you were lucky you could even get away with $#$^$&* as long as you didnt try to insult someone. Now it seems that only personal insults are allowed somehow...

Maybe I just remember the good stuff but I used to enjoy it more back then...

It certainly wasn't better back then. I think I remember the reason I was posting. The only topics at that time were links to comedy stories, endless tedious in jokes or nattering about sports.

These days, perhaps as a reflection of the times, the topics are a lot more heavyweight.

That might also be a result of the splitting of the Off Topic forum into political and nonpolitical forums (Front Room & Back Room).

The gun threads might have been a kind of turning point as well.

solypsist
11-27-2005, 19:24
the org was one of my first forums, so a lot of time (and posts) were spent on adapting to the online world. i think the gun threads were the turning point, too. that was when partisan hackery emerged and the knee-jerk reaction to it began replacing singular ideas.

the other difference, is that there was a good mix of frivolous threads mixed in with serious ones. i haven't had a good laugh in the backroom since it seperated, and this carries over to the overall tone of the room as a whole. plus seeing all those retired names just brought back simple memories.

Yet also more factionalist. With quite a few members it's too easy to predict where they'll stand on most given issues, and who they'll end up bickering with as a result. At least that rarely carries over into other subjects.

On reflection allowing the formation of the "clubs" within the forum was probably a divisive mistake, though the old gun threads were a precursor to what we have now.

Though Idaho is also completely right with his post before of how we became so devisive. funnily enough it was the Conservative posters that started the whole club thing as well.

The first of the 'conservative' posters was called something like Takedashiso or some such. He started the trend of answering every thread with a lengthy cut and paste from one of his approved sources.

There has always been posters who are American conservatives without having to make this some form of doctrinal religion (Redleg, Shaihulud). The current trend to say I am a conservative this, conservative that, this is the way a conservative would pick their nose, etc, seems to be a feature of american culture at the moment.

I believe everything went completely down hill when I came on. Look at the dates...
I joined in 2002. I've beened banned several times and have caused so many problems here. And judging from the posts here, it doesn't seem to be as great of a place as it use to be because of people like me that have conservative tendancies...
Well I can't post a poll for some reason (and if this can be fixed could a mod hook me up?)so I encourage one of you old guys, especially Idaho, JAG, or Tachi (because of my deep respect you wither of you), to post a poll for me, and I don't want the poll locked or deleted. The question should be, "Should Devastatin Dave be banned in order to make the Tavern to what it use to be".
I'm dead serious about this. I've had polls for my new name, my avatar, now i want one that the entire Tavern has a democratic choice for my future. I believe that this could be the first step to cleaning up the place. Then you can use the same operation for other cancers that reside here.
I want this, so please someone give me this poll.
When the poll has been up for 7 days after its posted and the votes come out in favor of my banning, then I will have Tosa delete my account. I really want this, so please someone, make it happen. Its my early Christmas present to all of you.

Well I can't post a poll for some reason (and if this can be fixed could a mod hook me up?)

You have to create a new thread (the separate "start new poll" option does not exist any more).
On the bottom of the screen for the new thread you will find a menu for "Additional Options" (you might have to open this menu with the arrows on the bottom right).
In this menu you will find the option to add a poll.

Hope this helps (sorry, I'm to lazy right now to post screenies to accompany the instructions ~D )

P.S.: I do not think that the poll you have in mind would make too much sense, but you are of course free to post it
