In my Egyptian campaign I'm thankful for anyone who is allies with me because it's rare someone wants an alliance with because my empire is so large. I decided that I wouldn't kill any of my allies the traditional way unless they attacked me so I have chosen some stealthy tricks to cause some trouble for them. My current allies include England, Aragon, and the Byzantines (who are very large and powerful by the way). Anyway, I recently took Constantinople without warring with Byzantium. My spies incited revolts over about 5 turns until the rebels won. I then sent 2000 troops to recover the coveted province for myself. I also have future dark plans for these "buddies" of mine by letting the Byzantines soak up the impact of a certain Horde.
I then sent my spies to England and they are causing havoc to the English armies by inciting revolts everywhere. I'm losing a spie per turn but am producing two per turn. An English heir has already fallen from the rebels and they are slowly becoming weaker by the year. I plan to destroy them using this technique.
The Aragonese lost Aragon a long time ago to the Spanish (but it is now in my possession) and only hold Toulouse. Two years in a row now their king has fallen prey to my 5-star assassin.~;p
Meanwhile, my former allies the Italians are long gone and the once powerful and glorious HRE (also former allies) are fading fast. I have conquered about 50% of their former provinces and just last turn they erupted into civil war, causing me to take advantage of their misery by invading six provinces of theirs. The Spanish were also my former allies and have now been defeated twice by me. They once had a Jedi King (He almost took down three Mamluk Cavalry units attacking from multiple sides, an Armenian Heavy Cavalry unit and a Saracen Infantry unit all by himself before fleeing) who had three heirs killed in action in a single battle. He died of natural causes a few years later and the Spanish empire collapsed into itself.
Anyway else have their own rules they play by? I generally don't kill someone unless they attack me first. All they need is some, *ahem*, gentle prodding first.~;) I also don't kill my allies by war, I try to use other tricks, some of which you see above. I find the game more interesting and fun when I play like this. Also, this way I don't look like a bad guy in breaking my alliances.
